I'm hoping that's all it is. With oil streaming from the cylinder screws (right side) and pushing it's way out of the gasket at the top near the screws, it made for an uncomfortable ride home. Is the gasket all that needs replacing, or is something else going on? Can I fashion my own gasket from the material one can buy at the auto parts store, and if so or not what is the sealant (bonding agent) used when replacing it.
Thanks

There are shaped rubber seals that seal the bolt head to the cover. They have probably hardened and shrunk with time, and if you pulled the cover to check valve clearance they will not seal up again. These most likely are the source of your oil leak and will have to be replaced with the factory part. The cover gasket inner and outer, is an o-ring type that should also be replaced with the factory part, but you could get by with some RTV for awhile.

The right parts are way too cheap to try Mickey Mousing it.

04 11121460463 Gasket you need 1 $10.51 ea.
05 11121460464 Gasket you need 1 $10.51 ea.
07 11121460368 Plug you need 2 $1.93 ea.
08 11141460934 Bush you need 12 $0.82 ea.

Should be in stock at most dealers.

Make sure the "grounding spring" that goes between the valve cover and one of the cam journals gets back in place. One of the valve cover bolts goes through the middle of it.

It's a bit unclear exactly what the OP is describing here..

With oil streaming from the cylinder screws (right side)

To me - the right side would imply the crankshaft side - which has one gasket and I forget how many bolts holding the cover on.. (8?)

Beamercon - could you explain a bit more where on the bike you're seeing the oil leaking from?

TIA!

Opps. I only saw "cylinder screws". If it is the crank cover (the one with the oil fill cap in it), you need:

04 11141460466 Gasket you need 1 $9.18 ea.
05 11141460934 Bush you need 10 $0.82 ea.

My '87 appears to be oozing from the same place, what I would call the crank cover, the black part with the stripes and the BMW logo. It's what on a normal engine would be the oil pan. It also appears to be oozing from the finned case just below that the crank cover with the site glass. I guess this would be called an oil pan, or perhaps a sump?

Anyway, has anyone replaced that gasket? It sort of looks like opening a can of worms as far as what has to come off to replace it...is there a bottom end gasket kit I should be looking into?

I guess I'll be practicing standing on my head to do the job. Does Righty tighty work when you are on your head?

Thanks in advance.
