I have a new 09 R1200RT. I had the first service at 1000kl, and now have 2380kl. All of a sudden the low oil sign came up. It went out after and after I checked it, sure enough it is on the low side.
Is this normal for a BMW?

Wow, I have an 06 R1200RT and only use about a cup of oil between 6000 mile oil changes. The oil light often comes on at a stop but checking has always shown plenty of oil. As long as it is within the circle in the window it is not low. Be sure to put it on it's center stand and wait 15 or more minutes before checking.

Can't tell yet. At this low mileage the piston rings likely have not fully set yet. That may take 10, even 20 k miles.
Also, when you top up the oil, be very careful not to overfill. Overfilled oil ends up in the airbox and gets recycled into the intake fuel'air mix. There's plenty of reference for the correct oil level checking procedure so I won't go into that.
YMMV

BTW, and FYI, and FFR (for future reference): the R12RTs, and all other R12 models except for the demised R12C series, are classified as Hexheads, not Oilheads.
