Paris-Dakar star dies
Richard Sainct
Sainct's KTM team have withdrawn from the event
Three-time Paris-Dakar rally winner Richard Sainct has died in a crash during the Pharaohs Rally in Egypt.

The French motorcyclist was involved in two crashes on Wednesday's fourth stage and the second accident proved fatal.

There were no witnesses to the accident and the alarm was raised when fellow competitors reached the scene.

"Sainct was transported unconscious but alive to the mobile clinic. Shortly after being admitted he died," said race organiser Massimo Garbaccio.

"The body was transported to the hospital at Siwa and then to Cairo. We're all very shocked."

The 34-year-old Sainct won the Paris-Dakar in 1999, 2000 and 2003.

His KTM team withdrew from the Pharaohs Rally following his death.

A statement from the team said: "KTM regrets to announce the death of three-time Paris-Dakar winner Richard Sainct. Our thoughts are with Richard's family."

Man, I will never forget the day he rode into Bulow on his PD bike at Daytona... many BMW muckety-mucks in tow.

Earlier that day he was standing in the BMW exhibit at the Cycle World show and no one knew who he was.

So I sat down and talked to him for about 45 minutes, completely uninterrupted.

Even though I am an old Florida boy and grew up riding in sugar sand, he gave me several tips about how to ride. He had me standing on the pegs of his PD bike and showed me how to use my knees and put pressure on the pegs... and how to feather the clutch while riding in a gear higher than you'd think to minimize wheelspin. I learned a lot that day.

What a completely normal guy.

What a loss to the racing world.
