Did I get your attention? If you ride a K100RS, K1100RS, or a K75 with an RS fairing, you probably appreciate the balance between protection and airflow around your body. You probably just like the look too. And you have discovered that any duffle bag has to be parallel to the bike rather than sit across the passenger seat if you want to get any useful information from your mirrors.
The "optional BMW rack" gives a little protection for the tail section paint, but does little else. I wasn't completely happy with it on my previous K75RS and my current K100RS lacked anything to protect that tail section beyond the saddle. What to do?
I found that if I clamped an inch or two of 2" thick soft foam rubber under the rear of the saddle (and yes, it is just that simple: insert the foam with the saddle open, close the saddle) that the foam did not easily pull out. So I cut a piece 10'' X 12" and the long end goes to the back of the bike.
This not only protects that tail piece paint from scratches but also sort of levels out the area from the passenger seat to the back of the bike. I've found that, using two ROK straps attached to two luggage loops (aerostich.com cat#9056) on each of my standard hard bags, my duffle never moves. (Today I used that system to haul home a large bag of cat food.)
But that yellow foam is ugly, you say. Hey, it is invisible when there is something on top of it. And when it is not needed you just remove it.
If any of you have found a better way of transporting a duffle bag on a KRS, I'm sure we would all like to hear about it.
