Is there a cutoff year going back on a R1100 RT where the cylinder head cover cannot be replaced with the cover with the built-in highway pegs?
I ask this because my knee and my K1100 are not getting along. I broke my leg a couple of years ago and which screwed up my knee. I can't go 35 miles before I have to pull over and stretch the leg out. I am thinking a bike that I can put highway pegs on will help.
I went from Burlington Vt. to Morristown, NJ and it took 8 1/2 hours. A tad over three hundred miles. Had to stop a whole bunch of times and once for lunch. A very painful ride.
The next bike will be either an R-bike or a Goldwing. Something where I can stretch the legs out.

moondog, check out this link to Cycle Gadgets:

I think the full range of oilhead models; 1100, 1150 & 1200, are covered.
Similar products are J-Pegs and Talons.
To my mind the Talons are a great value, but do not visually integrate as well with the bike. Their link:

Google around and I think you'll find a variety of products.
By the way, I have seen several K bikes with pegs. You can always mount them on engine protection bars.
(If you're looking for a rationale for making the move to an oil or hexhead - do it for the sheer pleasure of riding BMW's modern interpretation of the boxer. I'm just sayin')

You may have seen pegs on the K100 or K75 but I don't believe pegs can be put on to the K1100RS. The side fairings restrict this type of addition unless one choses to blow holes in the fairings. The other bikes are not faired quite as much as the K1100. One reason it is such a hot bike. I don't have a R-bike but I will be looking for one soon. And no rationale. Just my knee can't handle the K-bike position any more.

I had my left knee replaced in January. I get about 35 miles in the standard position till I have to stretch my leg out a bit. Usually I just straighten it out or dangle it down to the pavement. How many folks have used the highway pegs? Are they worth the money?

still somewhat new to the RT's
2 questions on this:
1) Are the cylinders that strong to take the forces on them from this?
It just seem not right to put a torsional force to the already stressed parts of the cylinder assembly.
2) I stuck a leg out to where a peg might be and it seems the tupperware at the sides would be in the way. Is this not true?

The instructions on the pegs (at least on line) warn not to stand on them. They are only for resting your feet.

Take a look at Mick-O-Peg. I sat on a R1150RT at the national and was impressed with their design as far as comfort.

I too have some hip and knee problems and it is wonderful to be able to change leg position on a long trip. Everything including shipping was less than $150. I do not feel they place undue force on the stock valve cover bolts nor dangerously limit the thread overlap of the two bolts holding them (they may be installed to either the top or bottom as you prefer). There are size options for riders of different leg lengths plus they account for the cylinder offset on our boxer motors. I ride solo so I use my passenger footpegs with the optional adapters available from Hawks.

I ride an R110RT, 2000,with Elf-pegs, which at first I didn't like. After some miles more, I find them useful in relieving leg stress. The riding position for my legs (I'm 5'7") seems a bit wide with my feet on the extended pegs, but it does allow a nice stretch. I typically extend the pegs following a stop so that I don't have to root around with my feet to extend them while riding.
They also allow a bike cover to not touch the warm cylinder heads.
Would I spend the money to purchase them? They were on the bike when I purchased it. I'd put the money first into a custom saddle, then perhaps peg extenders, then the highway pegs. I can stand up on the regular pegs to stretch my legs from time to time.

One of the reasons I went to the Cruiser. I have the Rizzo pegs and i also have Renegade cylinder bars to lay my leg(s) out on.
When I did the SS1000 it was like sitting in a LazyBoy at 80 mph.
Rizzo/Elf/Jpegs are worth it. Only if you find them used. $350 new is a bit pricey.

I have a set of S curve techs on my RT. I have had my knees scoped last year and I needed to stretch the legs too. The pegs helped me immensely!!! Every twenty mins I had to straighten the left leg out on rides... No more!

Well once I get a direct position instead of contracting, I'll think about a bike more adapt to my creaky bones. As a contractor, I don't know if I'll have a job tomorrow so I don't want to commit my finances to a major expense. Maybe with better insurance I can even go for a new knee! I have seen good ideas here.

highway pegs! I was left stranded on the side of the road near Winnipeg because the Talon units caused a bolt to fail and the oil started pouring out of the head...now I just throw my legs up under the mirrors of my RT or simply ride standing up....want a free set of Talon pegs?:)

Don't have a bike to put them on. Maybe they need some thread lock on them.

I also have highway pegs on my bike, nothing special as I was not comfortable with the elf pegs(my legs were too short) I usually only use one at a time, mostly the right side. My foot sits on top of the peg, just to allow me to stretch my leg since my knee is screwed up. It really does help and undue stress is not placed on the cylinder head as long as you are not trying to knock it off. Buy one, if you are not happy, shoot for a different one and sell the old one. I would go with the talons if I were you. I would really like to see one set that is adjustable for leg length. That would be the ticket for every RT.

What he said. Works great for my arthritic right knee(left knee is bionic).
It's just for resting/stretching your leg.

I have the ELF pegs on my '02 RT and love them. http://www.ccmotorcycles.com/elfx.shtml
Yes - they are expensive - but they fold in and let my bike fit through a standard man door - which is the only way to get my bike into my mechanic's shop.
