The problem described below has been resolved through some on line research (thank you Al Gore...). I extended the rear brake pedal micro-switch contact bolt and shortened the master cylinder arm an equal length, and this seems to have solved the issue. I'm leaving the OP intact; however, just in case some other 'newbie' like me has the same question.
I just acquired a beautiful 'new' well cared for 2003 K1200GT with 18K on the odo. One of two minor tech annoyances with the bike is that the cruise control is intermittent. Sometimes, it sets the speed (with the 'set' light showing, and sometimes it does not (no 'set' indication showing). I isolated the problem last night to the (thankfully) rear brake pedal not fully returning to its 'at rest' position and thus not pressing against the brake light switch enough to engage the cruise control circuit. I found this by trying to engage the cruise control at speed on the freeway, and when it would not engage (no 'set' light, either), I brought the rear brake pedal further up with my boot to ensure the switch was fully depressed and then tried again to set the cruise speed. It worked. This problem also probably means that I was sometimes driving around with the brake light on, which may have caused even bigger headaches in traffic.
Now that I've isolated the problem, I am wondering what the proper means is to adjust the brake pedal/brake light switch so that it fully engages the sprung switch when the pedal is in the 'at rest' position. I know that the switch is depressed by an adjustable bolt on top of the brake pedal, but I'd like to know if adjusting the bolt is really the proper way to go about resolving this problem. I've made similar adjustments to brake light switches on my cars when I had a stuck on brake light, but I want to make certain this is also the right method on my 'new' K bike.
Is there anyone here who might be able to confirm that adjusting the bolt is the right way to go?
Thanks!
