What is labeled simply a "lock" on the MAX BMW parts catalog is, in actuality, the unit that bolts to the rear fender and has a latch that holds the rear seat down. The "rod" (for lack of a better term) runs to the rear end below the taillight where the lock cylinder is. My unit broke where it bolts to the fender. A new one, sans lock cylinder is available for less than $40. The universal lock cylinder and replaceable tumblers (so you can key it for your ignition key) is another almost $40! I figure if you can put a lock cylinder IN the replacement unit, I should be able to get mine OUT of my broken unit. Anyone removed one of these? I have no idea what's involved??
