View Full Version : Entering the Radio Security Code

I removed my Radio from my 93 K1100LT to just do a DEEP cleaning on all the plastic parts. I was able to get the proper code from the dealer BUT he did not tell me if there was a special procedure to enter the code.
I do NOT have the manual for the radio either.
So the question is: What key combinations do I need to enter (besides the code 4221) to activate the radio.
Also, when disconnecting the radio I noticed a few connections I am not familiar with. From the radio there is a gray/silver cable labled ACC and from the red HOT connector harness there is a purple wire. They do fit together, but I am not sure if I should plug them together. The purple wire is NOT the ground. The ground is brown (right)?
Anyway, when entering the code after turning the radio on, I get nothing. SO there has to be a trick here I am not aware of. I have 12V on the hot and I have a good ground.
Any help would be appreciated....

Ralf..
Do not randomly connect wires. The ACC wire is to trigger a power antenna in an automotive application. Random connection of wires without knowing if they should be connected can lead to letting the smoke out - which is NOT a good thing at all.
When you turn the radio on is it displaying ANYTHING?
The car applications of the "coded" radio will show "CODE" in the display. All you do is enter the 4 digit number and it should accept it and behave normally.
I believe the motorcycle one uses the same code process as the auto ones did, if not - you'll need more guidance from the dealer.

If I recall the radio will do nothing, no sound no action.
Punch in the 4 diget code, using the numbers used to preset stations. If you have the correct code the radio will come to life.

The ACC lead should be hooked up to a 12 volt source that is hot when the key is on. I can't help with the other wire. As for the code, I don't believe that you will be able to enter it until you hook up the ACC wire. After you do that it is simply a matter of entering the code. When done correctly you will see the numbers appear on the display as you enter them. If you accidently enter the wrong code, hold the scan button (I believe that's the correct button) down for a few seconds and it will clear the wrong code and let you start over.

P.S. There should also be an extra wire for hooking up a power antenna, it is labeled ANT.

Ralf,
On my '93 LT, if the anti-theft feature is activated and I turn the radio on, the panel glows (you have to be in a dark place to even see this glow) and I punch in the code using the preset buttons. As soon as the last button is pressed, the current frequency appears in the display and you hear the station (or static) from the speakers.
If you mess the code up you have to press and hold the BAND button for about 15 seconds until the previously entered code clears and then you can make another attempt at entering the code.
I also saved my installation instructions (95 65 1 000 100) because my radio was not available when I took delivery on the bike. :p
The Red/Yellow wire should be connected to a constant 12+ source.
The Red wire is not connected (This wire is for a powered antenna)
The Blue wire is the Right speaker.
The Yellow wire is the Left speaker.
The Brown wire is Ground.
The Gray wire is the switched +12 source.

Got it !
All I needed to do it to connect the ACC wire from the radio to the Purple wire on the connector with the red 12V hot, turn on the radio, enter the code and BINGO.
Thanks to all,
Ralf

I'm glad you got your radio working but I think you have it so it doesn't turn off with the ignition switch. The ACC wire should be hooked to a 12 volt switched source.

You are right, it does not switch off. So should I reverse the RED and ACC wires??? Sounds like it.

No, do not reverse them. You need to find a switched source for the ACC wire. It will be a wire coming from the bike wiring harness.

I think the PURPLE one next to the RED 12V might be switched. They are on the same connector. I have a volt meter. I will check it out.
