My 1977 R100RS with 1984 transmission has been getting more difficult to get into first gear when hot?

It will go into gear and shift up or down when cold but when hot it's tempermental!

Here is the weird part, when I am hooked up to my Bushtec Trailer it shifts fine?

I have replaced the bearings about 100,000 miles ago, it looked very clean and no wear inside to speak of.

Has about 300,000 miles on it now.

Anyone have an idea what's going on?

Just curious...you did all the work, either in the newer transmission or with the older flywheel/clutch, to make this combination work? As a general rule, these parts aren't compatible.

If it works fine with the trailer, I'm wondering if there isn't some kind of rearward pull with the trailer that somehow pulls on the tranny output flange with changes the meshing somehow inside the tranny, allow it to shift.

I knew someone would ask that!
Afew year after I bought the RS I picked up a 1984 RS wreck and transplanted the whole engine / transmission / wiring / Guages into the 77 that needed a rebuild. The 84 only had 6000 miles on it.

when was the last spline lube done?

Just got back from a 50 mile test ride after I removed the transmission, cleaned the splines clutch & tranny, relubed and reinstalled transmission.

Shifts like a dream!

Should have known better after all this time! I was imagining all kinds of things wrong with the transmission. I must have forgotten to do this last year or just done too many miles since the last lube job.

Thanks again!

Darryl, a 300,000, low mileage bike, such as yours, should shift like new!:laugh

ESPECIALLY with the 1984 drivetrain!
