what's the unit called to which it is attached? (I'll call it the "big black thing with fins" BBTF), it's black on my K)Inside you'll find the sump guard, the filter, the rod that turns the water pump, etc. I really don't care what it is called, I've called it a variety of names this morning, I just want to remove it. I've drained the oil, drained the coolant, removed the oil filter cover, (I'll get to the filter in a minute, most of you kprobably know where this is going now) removed the oil guaze and exposed the inside of the pan.

Still inside the pan area I've removed two long bolts in the rear near the transmissioin(the two that are not recessed allen heads)I've taken off all the visible 6mm bolts to this , (even the little hard one to get at by the coolant hose) of this BBTF and I can't get it to drop off even with gentle tapping of a rubber mallet. Anyone done this? I mean, I'm sure many of you have, but what am I missing, besides a fair amount of wrenching ability.

Which brings me to the oil filter. Stuck, welded on, death grip from hell. I put it on last oil change. Did I over tighten it? I have strong hands, but I've done many oil changes and nothing next to the degree of difficulty of removing this bosch oil filter comes close. Let me tell you I have done many prescribe methods including a very recent one here:http://www.bmwmoa.org/forum/showthread.php?t=38311&highlight=oil+filter+stuck

Lastly, and this might be a new thread entirely, upon attempted removal of the oil filter at the beginning of the oil change, many laborious hours ago, the tool to install and remove the filter (BMW OEM part) would not grip the teeth of the filter. I thought, hhmmm? and checked the snug fit with a new filter. Fine nice tight fit. Question. Do filters, the metal casing to be precise shrink?

I'm much more interested in answers for the former question, but curious as to your thoughts on the latter

Thanks.

I'll put all the smiles here that I would use in this thread at the various points the are called for:scratch:dunno:scratch:scratch:scratch:scratch more of this:dunno:dunno:dunno perhaps a :german and of course this :banghead:banghead:banghead:banghead:banghead:bang head:banghead:banghead

I just want to remove it.

WHY???

If you're trying to remove the filter, it won't help. To get the piece that you're trying to get off, you need to pull the transmission, clutch and intermediate housing (bell housing). There are bolts that go through the intermediate housing into the bottom of the block (the part you are trying to remove) from the clutch side into the block.

The filter can be removed from the bottom even if it is stuck with one of dozens of different styles of filter wrenches, chain wrenches, clamps, pliers and the proper technique (depends on how buggered up the filter is from your previous attempts to remove it. A good mechanic should be able to figure it out.

I can't help with the 1st question, but I also don't know of a reason to remove it if it isn't cracked.

The oil filter I may can help with. The BMW filter wrench will not fit the Bosch oil filter. Oil filters have different fluke patterns between brands. I am pretty sure that the OEM filter has different flukes than a Bosch. Mahle makes the OEM filter (I think, I know it isn't Bosch. Bosch is owned by Purolator.) Go buy a filter to fit the Bosch filter.

One trick is to drill 2 holes through your wrench and screw 2 sheet metal screws into the filter. It won't harm the filter wrench at all and you won't have to remove the oil pan.

"big black thing with fins" BBTF" = crankcase

beemerboneyard.com is where I bought the oil change kit which includes 5 filters, the o-rings and crush washers and a filter wrench. The wrench fit perfectly but I couldn't turn that filter until I brought out the circa 1950s pipe wrench.

I swear that filter is being held by vacuum. When I did break the seal some oil started flowing from the oil pump strainer. Not a lot of oil but I was surprised to see any. The oil pan was off for about 2 days so the oil had plenty of time to drain completely. The filter was so torn up that any vacuum should have been relieved. This will be a question for Paul Glaves next time I see him.

zoridog,
Can I borrow that crica 50's wrench. :whistle
Vacuum? I thought about it but once the filter is popped by whatever method people have used to get the darn thing to turn that should equalize any pressure. Right, or should i go back to playing the piano.....

My BMW oil filter wrench fits the Bosch filters that I use on my K1.

When I wrote that I was thinking I could be wrong, because Bosch filters have a different pattern than Fram, Super Tech some others.

YEs Budding geezer, you are correct to correct yourself.
Ok gents, back to the question. Before old age and virual obscurity set in. Since by deduction a) I have two OEM filter wrenches and b) both fit snuggly firmly nicely fluke to fluke to new bosch filters, mail to female, as it were, HAS THE FILTER SHRUNK. What is the metal and its temperature rating specifically to the k bike operating temps?

calling all big dogs.

zoridog, I went for the case of filters:blah I have a GS which take the same bosch.

I have a hard to wrapping my mind around this one as well, is the cause of the loose fitting flukes due shrinkage, because, loose flukes I have.

And I still have yet to dislodge the remaining piece of filter, which at this point is nothing more than the top metal case with the 6 holes in a ring just next to the threads.
I have stuck a pair of long nose pliers up there in through the holes , leveraged and turned with vice grips. the pliers broke. I was strong than them and so is the filter.

(they were stamped made in china)

I can't help but see a dremel here.

Had a similar situation (I think) Used long nose Vice Grips to clamp into the holes,
clamped another pair on those at 90 degees for leverage, and wacked it with a hammer a couple of times. The shock seems to work better than just pressure.

As for your shrinking flukes, I'm at a total loss:dunno
