R1200 Fuel Pump Bypass Cable

Occassionally, on R1200GS motorcycles from 2005-2009, water can leak into the fuel pump controller causing it to fair or the unit can overheat and blow the circuit board, blocking power to the fuel pump, leaving you stranded. This cable bypasses the failed controller and connects the fuel pump to an accessory power socket allowing the bike to start and run.

I recommend connecting the accessory port directly to the battery and that it is fused. The stock accessory port has a 5 amp limit and the fuel pump can trip the canbus virtual fuse with it's greater than 5 amp draw. To install the cable you need to carry a T-20 Torx socket in your tool kit.

This controller on the bike? It can get water? Why not "seal" it better and prevent water? I may look for mine, if I can find it! The cable is a good idea, but I'm into preventing it first. Thx, Randy:thumb

A smarter solution, in my opinion, is to carry a spare pump regulator. I carry one and a key antenna ring. The regulator is very easy to swap out, as easy as it is to install the bypass cable.

It is located on the fuel tank, left side, on the removable part that has the fuel pump and fuel filter assy.

The new units are much more tightly sealed as well. I replaced mine with a new one and keep the old one as a spare, probably for someone else!

If the recall is using the controller with the same part number as the 2009 model bikes the problem may not have been solved. I received a call from a gentleman in NM who had the FPC blow on a 2009 GS ADV. Its not the water that is messing up the chip board. The heat sink isn't actually sinking the heat from the board because they don't touch. Time will tell.
