California air heads

I was looking at a R80 for California and notice an extra tube running into the head near the Exhaust. Did California require air pump or some such in 1983?

Nope, they all came with them in 83-84, maybe more years. Don't know when they started by both my 83 an 84s have them. A lot of folks, particularly in hot weather areas suggesnt taking them off. There are several BMW sites that explain how. I'm not at my home location so I can't give the exact URL.

I de-smogged my R80.
It's not too hard, you have to be patient and smart.
snowbum's article is pretty good.

when you're done, you'll end up with a pile of crap like this and the bike will run no different save for a few pounds of weight:
