The LCD gear indicator on my gauges is showing the incorrect gear I'm in. The numbers are changing when I'm not shifting.
What's the cause of this?

There's a connector for this on the right side of the frame. The IBMWR tech archive has a procedure for checking the connector to find out what's going on.
It might also have water in it.

It can be the connector, the wiring, the switch on the back of the tranny, or the display. Read the articles on the tech website, like Kbasa suggested. The connector's easy to fiddle with, the others are more difficult.

I did forget to say that I washed my bike last night with the garden hose.

Yes. The swingarm must be removed to access it.

Ahh..
Look where you last worked (Eilenberger's Law of Troubleshooting.)
You just identified the cause. Wait a day or so and it should go back to normal. Usual cause is water in the switch on the rear of the transmission.

That switch shown in the above schematic is housed in plastic and will crumble and disinigrate over time. I have replaced several in that condition including my own 87 K100RT last year. It may be your problem. Good luck finding your problem.
