Hi Airheads! I am looking for technical drawings of airhead tools that I can use to make the tools. I am looking for transmission tool drawings in particular but if they are airhead tools I can make them....I think. I landed a part time job in a machine shop with a heat treat oven and a surface grinder. Someone sent a thread that had drawings of a flange puller/installer and a shim plate but I have lost it. Thanks in advance for the help.:doh

I've found the site! Just in case anyone else is interested. I have the drawings for the shim plate and flange puller but still need the main seal installer drawings and a few of the others.

Do to the difficulty in acquiring tools I have built numerous tools to "get the job done". For the most part I simply copy what other have already done or are selling. The quality is sometimes questable but sometimes they exceed what you can buy. It is not a cost effective approach but makes me happy and keeps me occupied. I am hesitant to post any pictures of these tools as previous posts have drawn critics from the woodwork. If you enjoy making the tools yourself as I do there are lots of example to follow. Just google the tool, copy and enjoy.

Roger the critics. The tool dimensions are the big deal I guess. I'm looking for the better mousetrap and the dimensions to go with it. Ideas can be modified to coincide with capabilities and tools available. I can get tool steel drops for free and can make virtually any tool that can be built with a surface grinder, engine lathe, and a milling machine. We have a heat treat oven as well. I could buy the tools but for the more than likely one time use it just doesn't make good sense. I have way more time than money, hence the "build my own tools" concept. There is not much room in my garage/shop so it is important to have the tools made before the job begins if at all possible. I do appreciate your input. It's always great to talk with another of the same mindset.

You could also hook up with some local Airheads or find out about TechDays put on as part of the Airheads Beemer Club. Often the group will have the tools that are needed. Another club, the Veterans Motorcycle Club of America, has a tool loan program. The club mostly focuses on pre '70 BMWs, but they might have other general tools.
I probably would also not make any one-use tools but would probably do all I could and then take it somewhere for 15-minute use of someone else's tools. I think even a BMW dealer might work with you that way, charging a small amount of shop time for the use.

That would make more sense. My psyche is geared toward self sufficiency and the ability to assist others when possible. There is little evidence to suggest my making a tool for a /2 just to have one available in case I needed to loan one, I would however make every tool I could get a drawing of for my 1983 R100RT in the outside chance I could use it on my bike and have it on hand in case someone else needed it. I like the idea of the tech day attendance. I'm an ABC member and in addition to membership here but I am not aware that anyone in my area is a member or anyone that sponsors a tech day. I'm in the Memphis area and B Jan didn't send me a dairectory with my membership....I should write and ask about that.

I located on the ABC website an article by Scott Marburger for the main seal driver tool on an R100 GS. And the accompanying removal/installation procedure. In the article Scott states that the seal should rest flush with the back of the engine case. Does anyone know if the R100RT main seal goes flush or if it protrudes a bit? Here is a link to the tool drawing and the article.

I think you have to be a member to access it.

According to Airmail, your AirMarshall lives in Sevierville, TN. My 18-month old dAIRectory shows two people listing Memphis. The on-line dAIRectory listing shows 4 people in Memphis...most likely that is somewhat out of date but the people probably still live there but just dropped out of dues-paying membership. I don't see any TechDays on the horizon in or around Memphis, TN.
And those tech articles don't require that you be a member to access them.

I appreciate the info Kurt. I wasn't aware there is a membership directory online or about the access to the tech articles. I'll try to contact the members in the area to see if there is any expertise/interest in the tech day phenomena. Hopefully we'll get one going on. Also, your Google suggestion netted the main seal tool puller diagram on the ABC site. Thanks for the help.
