Hi there,

I have owned my 93 K1100LT for about 4 weeks now. She is stinkin' up the garage with gas fumes. I did lift the gas tank to get to the X!@$*^@@ air filter (still didn't get to that yet) and saw that there are two small hoses that were NOT connected to the bottom rear of the tank. I connected them again, but am still getting the stinks. I plan to remove the tank to get to the air filter and check all the wiring. Any ideas???

PS: This bike had been sitting outside for a while but has been in a showroom fro 15 months until recently.

Thanks,

Ralf

I'd ask the dealer who you bought it from about that one. Have ou checked for any visible leaks on the floor from leaky fuel lines? Isn't there some sort of gasket assembly on the fuel cap? I'm not sure if there is or not. I'd check that out.

Those are vents, one for gas/fumes from the tank, one for water from around the cap. If the tank is full, or it is warm in your garage, the tank will vent fumes, there is no charcoal cannister to absorb them. It's just another K feature!

Got a '93 LT too! Great scoot, just needs a 6th gear.
On topic:
1> Owned 10 different Ks; general venting through the overflow & cap area drains have never caused me a significant gas smell.
2> On return of Nat'l, my LT developed a leak at the O-ring sealing the wire/level sensor plate in the tank bottom. I fixed it then with gasket sealer, now ride with the new one in the tail stock.
3> The bottom tank seams can develop leaks from corrosion. I don't see how, but I've got one that did (different bike).

I am by no means an expert but had a similar problem with my '97 K1100.
There are two vent lines running from the tank. One vents outside while one goes through a check valve and into the crankcase. The check valve was my problem. Evidently, this is a commom problem and the fix is to take the hose loose from the check valve and route it to an accumulator (BMW part) that you can put behind the tank. Take the check valve off and plug the line going to the crankcase. Throw the valve away.
The symptom I had was that when I opened the gas tank, it was pressurized - if you have pressure on the tank, that will fix the gasoline smell.

The check valve will provide a little positive pressure in the tank. That is normal and it is working as designed. If the vent hose becomes kinked or blocked or thecheck valve fails to open, you will build up a lot of pressure in the tank and can force fuel out around the cap or damage the tank. You can verify that your check valve is working by blowing in the end of the hose at the tank outlet, it should allow you to blow through the check valve into the crankcase. Mine makes a groaning noise when it vents.

I had a gas smell and found a tear in the tank botom on my 93 K1100LT. Had to get that fixed. One other time the old high pressure fuel hosed from the tank pump to the fuel injection leaked. It is a good idea to replace these at least every 5 years. Make sure that the hose you use is rated for fuel injection or it could rupture.

Pinhole in fuel tank?

I just had some fresh gas below the fuel rail and discovered the factory fuel hose clamps has loosened on my 1995 K75. Replaced same and no more problems. Sometimes if you overfill the tank and then park it on the sidestand the tank vent will do it job and spill fuel to the area where you parked. Not normally a problem, K's Rule!
