On my 89 GS. Goes like:bolt

Edit: I think I paid $43 new. Flea bay has them sometimes for a buck or so, since they often get replaced with sooper dooper hi energy wallet drainers. I paid retail because my dried-in-the-oven-sealed-with-liquid-tape stock coil was untrustworthy and I had to be somewhere.

I have used one on my /2 - R75/5 conversion since the late 70s with no problems.

I put a Harley Accel Super Coil on a 1977 R100/7 and yellow silicone wires. It started alot easier. Took a rode trip from Dallas to AZ. and then to Northern CA. temps were in the 100degree range. No problems at all. Free coil from a HD friend of mine and had to buy the wires.

How do you know what coil will work?
I need one for a 1981 R65.

Match voltage. Use a coil for points if you have them or for electronics if you have that system. Coils don't know what kind of machine they are on!

Wouldn't you want to match resistance, too? Our ignition system likes the resistance to be in a specific range.

Friend of mine put a Harley coil (meant for a Road Glide) on a Yamaha XS650 project bike. Worked fine - for about 20 minutes, then the coil melted. He has electronic ignition control. Methinks his electronics didn't have a signal the HD coil needed to keep its cool between firings.

That Harley coil in the top post is known to work with the hallsensor/icm on the later airheads.

Otherwise, yes, coils are designed to go with certain currents through them, hence the different resistances. A quick look at Motorrad's site will show the various coils that are Airhead-ready, and Rick sells a much-cheaper-than-BMW's-coil alternative, as well.

Tried finding the coil resistance (ohm) spec for 1981 R65 but it doesn't seem to be in any book I own. Anybody know?

An '81 would have the ICM ignition, which uses the 1.5 ohms coil(s). You can use Dyna coils, BMW coils, Harley coils, etc.

Loud coils save lives.
