View Full Version : R100RS gathering in the future (?)

Hello all R100RS / R100S owners!
This is John Cerilli ("JJ") from Pleasanton, CA.
I own / ride a white '78 R100RS "Motorsprot Edition" (see attached)
I was recently chatting with two other member of the R100RS registry, and thought how cool would it be to organize a gathering of all R100RS / R100S owners / riders / enthusiasts in the USA, and meet somewhere in the near future (?). ;)
I am not sure if this has ever been done before, but it is an interesting idea!;)
One person suggested meeting at Daytona in March 2010, but that's tough for all us West Coast / Pacific Northwest riders.
Then, I thought maybe somewhere in the Midwest and in concert with a BMWMOA rally, or something like that (?)
Anyway, what does everyone think about that idea?
Any idea how many BMWMOA members own R100RS / R100S bikes?
Best regards,
JJ Cerilli

How about including R1100/1150 RS owners? That would cover the R bike RS universe.

Seems like a good idea to me if it can be done in a way that will attract enough attendance. Together with a national would be a good way. May be we could get MOA to "reserve" a spot at the rally for RSers where we could camp together, etc. I love to see different RSs. I have three: two 100s (78 and 88) and one 1100 (95) and would like even more to meet others similarly afflicted;)

There is a "R100RS registry"?
How about some details on that?
'82 R100RS, bought new.

Thanks for all your feedback!
Here is the link for the R100RS / R100S / Motorsport worldwide registry / memorial:

This is the email I sent this morning to a few enthusiasts on that site:
1. We obviously should do this in the SUMMER of 2010 for weather reasons
2. I think somewhere in the middle of the USA is best so both east / west coasts could participate
3. I also think riding to an already scheduled BMWMOA rally is the way to go. It's already organized, etc. and we would just show up!
4. I agree we should invite R1100 / R1150 owners and we should also invite all our R90S brothers / sisters as well, yes? (The more, the merrier!)

This is the email I sent this morning to a few enthusiasts on that site:
Either my email is wrong or doesn't show up there because I don't have the message and I am in the registry. See Motorsport #6088534.

While I won't argue with SUMMER, a 2010 date might be tough to choose.
2. I think somewhere in the middle of the USA is best so both east / west coasts could participate
Agreed. There is already a small core of RS riders right here in the Midwest and we have discussed doing this locally. I don't know how many of them made it to our 'planned' gatherings earlier this year because I didn't. I have met a couple of them through Airheads and MOA connections, though.
3. I also think riding to an already scheduled BMWMOA rally is the way to go. It's already organized, etc. and we would just show up!
Well, I am not a big rally fan - spent too many years 'car camping', maybe. I'm considering making an exception, but I have another idea as well. This dovetails with some others' plans as well as mine.
BMW CCA's annual equivalent to the MOA International Rally is Oktoberfest. This year, it is based near Atlanta and Road Atlanta (needs a race track for driving events). Next year, it is here in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin (Road America). While this is a BFD to us car folks, by 'MOA standards, it's not much: maybe 1,000 participants in all. I know that a joint bike-car club gathering is a dream of our national events coordinator and this just may be a start. We (BMW CCA) reportedly have Road America at our disposal for the middle week of August, 2010. For those of you unfamiliar with the track, I can assure you that there is enough space there to accommodate pretty much anything that the BMW car club and the motorcycle clubs (yes, all of them) could imagine - including camping space for every RS rider you can scrape together. In fact, you could easily add the population of an entire International Rally to any typical public event there and hardly anyone would notice.
If this is an interesting proposal, I can pass the idea along to the 'CCA coordinator. As both an Oktoberfest committee member (autocross) and an RS owner, I can be here locally to see that our needs are considered and addressed. I think the 'CCA would welcome with open arms a group of people riding really cool bikes like ours. ;)
4. I agree we should invite R1100 / R1150 owners and we should also invite all our R90S brothers / sisters as well, yes? (The more, the merrier!)
Well, everybody knows an S is way cooler than any non-Airhead ... :stick

Well, again, it was just a wild idea.;)
I thought it would be interesting and fun and cool to see a group of R100RS / R100S, etc. owners get together at a rally or for the weekend (?):german
Very tough to organize and please everyone (in my experience...), so that's why I recommended a BMWMOA rally already scheduled someplace. Maybe 2010 is too soon also (?) The BMW CCA event in Elkhart lake is also interesting....(?);)
Personally, I am not much for camping anymore either, so I would hotel / motel it someplace closeby.;)
I guess we can all keep talking about and see what develops (?).

I don't own an RS, just an S, but the middle of America is almost Colorado and there is a rally here every year (last 20, anyway) in Paonia, called the 'top of the rockies' rally which would be a cool place to gather the 100RS's and S's. A couple of decent MC roads in the vicinity, too. In fact for you 'sweeper' guys, like me, the road from Delta to Carbondale via Paonia is one of the best in the world. Then there's always the road from Aspen to Leadville over Independence Pass (the photo in my avatar). Just a suggestion.

Interesting how every one wants to do this but wants to do it in there back yard :laugh
Any way.... I did not make it to Paonia this year had to choose between it and the National. But was there last year and its a Great Rally ! It would be a fine rally for setting up a bike display, and the club is a great bunch of people that I bet would help as much as they could.
In fact last year there was a wonderful turn out of RS's there and some fine examples for sure. In fact there was one R1100R/RS. Oil Head with a RS airhead faring that looked sweet. Looked good enough makes you wonder why the mother ship did not do it.
I will be at Paonia next year, cant make the national in Redman. I just cant be gone from my business that long.
If more speak up about showing up with there RS's I will ride mine. Most of the time I ride the GS to Paonia so I can explore the dirt roads while there.

Bring 'em both on a trailer, then ride the dirt roads when you get here on the GS and paved ones on the RS. There are lots more cool dirt roads than paved, as you probably know.
I gotta get another GS.
Maybe a vintage '80's model.

TRAILER ! :jawdrop I saw one if them one time I think it had a harley on it. My RS did not get 100,000 miles on it being hauled on a trailer. :p
OK I guess trailers do have a purpose, Every HD I have ever seen on one was QUIET :rofl

I hear ya. I don't have one, either, but it is easier than riding two bikes simultaneously. It would be something to see, though.

All depends on the distance / how much availalbe time you have, yes?;)
I certainly would rather RIDE anytime , but trailering, and then riding, as opposed to not going at all, is fine by me!;)
P.S. (No, I don't own a trailer!):laugh

How about your consideration of the Texas National Rally to be held 9-11 April (week after Easter), in Llano Texas, the heart of the Hill Country. This is an all type BMW rally, but I am currently working an Airhead presence and agenda. The San Antonio BMW Club will be hosting the event this year and details will be posted at our web site (SABMRA.org) in the near future. I have four airheads, two of which are 84 RS's and would like to see other like models.

I'd say that if you really want this to work on an on-going basis, it might be a good idea to hold the event at one or a series of the larger Rallys. The MOA's national and the RA Rally is where I'd start. I saw a few (Accent on few!) nice RS's at both rallys last month.
Why? Because those bikes are getting scarcer by the year and a special event would encourage more riders to bring out an Airhead rather than ride in on the K-bike or the Oilhead.
I'm also sure that at least a couple of venders might be willing to put up a prize or two for the nicest bikes.
In fact, do the event in conjuction with the Airheads and you'd really have something!
Anyway, thats what I'd do....

Count me in!! :deal My 84 RS should be rolling by the end of August (yea).
A gathering of RS's of all years would be really nice!:german
The thing about the larger gathering is getting "lost" in the crowd. :p
Eureka Springs is a bitch to move through/around in peak season, it's almost as bad as Branson, MO anymore (opinion of course).
Kansas/Colorado/Utah/New Mexico/Wyoming is good, need reasonably priced motels (too old to camp), decent restaurants, and good riding roads. H m m m m that fits a LOT of places :usa.

Agree. Have an oilhead RS but would love to see the " old girls there" if I could attend!

I cannot do it in 2009, but maybe 2010.:german
Again, will watch the BMWMOA rallies for next year and see if there is one that would fit for east / west coast folks - and everyone in between!;)
Yes, maybe Texas /Kansas/Colorado/Utah/New Mexico/Wyoming would work (?)

I have a 'go-ahead' on an RS gathering at BMW CCA's Oktoberfest in 2010. The question now is, what is it you want? Right now, all I can promise is lots of space for a day gathering.
The track (Road America) may allow on-site camping but I do not know if it will be for an additional charge or how much that might be. I do know that there are showers and usually open food facilities on site. There are also some campgrounds nearby as well as motels, if you prefer. How many would want to camp?
I will look into special rate day passes for the Oktoberfest social events (something generally going on every evening) and events of interest to RS riders. This obviously leaves out the driving events (autocross, road rallies, driver school, and club racing) but I expect we could easily include a nice RS display area at the concours so all the compulsive car cleaners could see compulsively cleaned (or not) bikes. Dedicated parking for events should be do-able.
I will also seek a lunchtime track touring session - essentially moderate-speed on-track parade laps while the corner workers get a lunch break from active duty. Anyone willing to pay $10-$25 for up to an hour of riding around Road America?

C.R. Kreiger -
Thanks so much for your kind offer / feedback.
If I had more time off, riding to Elkhart Lake in 2010 would be great. However, >2,200 miles (31.5 hours) one way from the west coast is a long way if you are time constrained. ;) I am thinking one week round-trip from the coast...(?)
Also, I was thinking of riding to a BMW motorcycle rally than a BMW car rally, and I
would most likely "hotel / motel it" rather than camp (just my personal preference...);)
So, at this point, I think I will wait and see what MOA rallies are scheduled for 2010, and maybe one's that are a little closer, (TX / CO maybe?) then, maybe start this thread up again.;)
Best regards,
JJC

It might be too far East for some but the Mid-Ohio AMA Vintage Motorcyle days could be a location. There is plenty of camping and 40 acres of flea markets.
