For those of you who do your own maintenance, which oil and filter do you use? Strictly BMW, or that recommended in the Owners Manual (Castrol)?
I have been doing my own maintenance, using strictly BMW oil and filter, but have been wondering why since even BMW recommends Castrol oil. Has anyone used it? Thoughts?
What about filters?

I been using Castrol oil 20W50 (dino oil) from Advanced Auto or Auto Zone, it comes in a big 4 qt. yellow container (Castrol GTX). That is the stuff my owners manual and my new BMW service CD tells me to use.
I been using the expensive BMW oil filter so far. Probably stick with that until the warrenty runs out then switch to a Puralator Filter (I think). The BMW filter only to honor the warrenty requirements.

That is strange. My Riders manual references Castrol GTS (not X, I just double checked) and cannot even find that stuff on the Castrol site.

i have a new F800GS (uses same filter as your K-bike), and before i purchased my first set of filters i asked my local BMW service manager what i needed to use. His reply was "an accredited good quality filter and oil" would be fine, and it did not need to have the roundel on it. i asked "I'm planning on a K&N filter and Castrol m/c specific oil- are those okay?" His reply was "those are fine choices", and would meet warranty needs if necessary. (an additional nice thing about the K&N is that it uses a regular metric socket for removal/install- no need to purchase a special filter wrench.)
I would not use a Fram (or similar) car filter (ever), but something designed for a m/c is just fine.

There is a thread somewhere about a change in the oil BMW recommends for the wedgies.

Got frustrated by the recommendation by BMW for Castrol GPS 10W-40 oil, which is not marketed by Castrol USA in North America and the dealers selling BMW branded motor oil.
So after several emails and phone calls, this is the statement I received from BMW:
1) that BMW recommends BMW motoroil, and that Castrol GPS 10w-40 is only recommended due to concerns about availability of BMW motoroil.
2) that no 4-stroke non-synthetic motorcycle oil will void the warranty
3) that any engine damage that resulted from a BMW oil filter would be covered by the BMW warranty within the limits of the warranty
4) that any engine damage that resulted from a non-BMW oil filter would not be covered by the BMW warranty
5) that use of a non-BMW oil-filter would not void the BMW warranty other than as in item 4 above.
Not sure this is anymore heat than light, but I sent this to BMW to confirm the conversation and invite correction if they chose. Haven't heard back.

I have been using 10 w 40 and a BMW filter.
The last change I noticed that the length of the filter had changed. about 3/16 longrer. Now I had to drop the foot peg out to get the filter on.
I use DALube.
They manufacture a oil for speed/sport applications. High compression- turbo
engines. I spoke with a chemist and his response was as long as the oil had the
same letter designation it complies with the standard.
I order direct from the warehouse.
