I just purchased one of these for my 96 1100RT. It still seems to be using up oil and I have noticed a little on the head around the filler cap. I have a couple of questions for those wiser than me in the BMW world (I've always had Hondas before this bike).

1) Do these bikes typically use up oil? I bought this bike in May of this year with 12K on it and it now has a little over 19K. I keep the oil at the top of the sight glass and, after every 600-800 miles find that it is down at least to the middle of the glass. A service tech at Blue Moon Cycle told me that these bikes may take 20k to "seat" but I am curious. Never had anything but water cooled engines before and never had to add oil between changes. What's normal?

2) To install this cap I have to remove the Cyl head cover. Do I need to drain the engine oil first? Anything I should be aware of or can I just unbolt the cover and do the job. I know I need to get a manual but just haven't gotten to it yet. If its a complicated job, I'll just wait till the next service and replace it then

Thanks!

Try keeping the oil level mid window or lower & see if the level keeps dropping. Top of the window is really too high & the engine may just be pushing it out the breather system. Removing the valve cover is simple, just back out the 4 bolts & pop it off. Have a drain pan underneath to catch the drips.

As long as you see oil within the red circle of the sightglass you're fine with oil amount.
My 2002 R1150RS has 25600 miles and still use oil when I do spirited type riding.
Never add oil to the top of the red cirble.

Hi Jeff, Early this year I bought my first bike a 97 R1100RT. I was also dicourged with the oil it was using, It only had 32000 on the bike and freguently added oil a couple of ounces at a time. The dealer said they changed the oil before they sold it to me. So I thought it was okay, My younger brother who owns K75Rt suggested that I change the oil and filter and see what happens. So I changed the oil and filter and the my oil consumption all but disappered it as been so little I haven't added any oil and that was 1500 miles ago. So that would be my first suggestion the second is change the fluids in the driveline also. Good Luck happy riding
