My old 1981 R65 gas cap literally rotted away at the bottom and the other day when I tried to fill up the top of the cap pulled off and I had to use needle nose pliers to get the rest of the cap off to fill up.
QUESTION... I ordered a new cap from Bob's and it came with the lock assembly. The lock assembly was seperate from the cap...after trying to put it in the circular hole that it's supposed to go in, for the life of me, it won't stay in. Does it need to be pressed into the cap...? I'd hate to force it if there is some trick.
Anyone know what to do?
Thanks:banghead

Snowbum had the following page on locks:

http://bmwmotorcycletech.info/locks_caps_etc.htm

In the section on gas caps, he talks about installing the cylinder.

He also mentioned the following on another one of his pages:

"For a fuller treatment, with photos, see the BMW Riders Association publication called On The Level (OTL), dated April 2006. An article by Anton Largiarder is quite informative on the later screw caps....including information on changing the locks, ETC."

Here's an article on Anton's site...it might be similar to what's in OTL.
