Just opened the box on my R259, but I wont get to install for another week. I have any early, September 1993, R1100RS and I'm looking to any advise on installation and set up.
I'm looking for improved performance. To date I've installed a Remus exhaust system using the stock pipe, but eliminating the cat, and a K&N airfilter. From eveything I've read, the motronic ingnition system will do its best to defeat any major perfromance improvement, other than reducing the weight of the stock exhaust.
I live in Tucson AZ and like to ride fairly fast on local twistier - 100 - 200 mi at a pop.
Any experience out there with problems on carbon build up due to over rich mixture? Is it really an issue?

Yes, it is really an issue....from experience.
If you set up the R259 to run RICH you will at first experience a very HOT throttle with smooth operation....but with time, I estimate 1-2,000 miles or sooner, you will start to have pinging appear and with more time more pinging, etc......
All of this to get a HOT throttle; but as explained in many other places, you will at most receive just a few 2-5 more HP max.
Your stock motor is getting max. HP output now....it's only problem is that is runs just slightly lean....so,...
I suggest that since you have purchased the R259, and you want to get the best performance you can, that you follow the instructions you received with the unit, except that you approach the "tuning phase in reverse", instead of turning up the POTS to the recommended levels and backing down, you instead make sure you have an accurate digital volt meter and do the tuning in reverse....start with all the POTS at (o) and only increase the "cruise" POT slightly, just a little bit, say to 0.200 volts and then ride the bike for a while.........
Your objective is to reach a normal running mode where the spark plugs operate with a "normal" light tan color....if they are running very dark or black with carbon....so is the inside of the combustion chamber and you will end up with a "carboned up" motor that pings any time the motor gets hot....just what you don't want when you are running the motor hard.........
After you run with the "cruise POT set at this level for a while, 500-1,000 miles, check the plugs; still silver/white then raise the voltage by 0.100 ( no more) and try again......you will eventually reach a point where the plugs start to look dark/black; then back up a 0.100 volt and run there.........
You should be able to run at this level without problems and have a bike that never surges too.....
the other POTS will only add additional gas on acceleration and give you a "hot rod" with low mileage and be hard to control the throttle in aggressive high speed sweepers, etc....do this only if you want a "dragster" type throttle response....but it too will lead to a carboned up motor........go ahead turn them up to the recommended settings and take a ride...it will seem like a "hotrod", but then check the plugs and you will se what I mean....
Remember, the instructions tell you that you must be running the motor with the "Cat. code plug" installed and the TPS at it's normal ( factory) setting for R259 to be used......
If you take this approach, I believe you can achieve the tweaking you want without setting the mixture too rich and have other types of problems start to appear.

To Jim & Leest: I have just over 1,200 miles on a Techlusion box on the recommended settings on my 1996 R1100R with 33,000 clocked. The NGK plugs are very light tan after this mileage, indistinguishable from stock. The exhaust has been slightly modified. So far, it has run like a different bike, most noticeably smoothness with zero surging. But Jim's advice makes a lot of sense, so could someone recommend an accurate voltmeter? A Craftsman digital, maybe?

If you want real accuracy, get a fluke. the others will be within 10 percent I would imagine.

I would suggest that anything within 10% is plenty good.. the range you will be looking at is something like 0.100 volts to 2.500 volts and any individual voltage can be + or- 10% and not really matter.....
I'm using a very accurate HP, good to 6 or 8 places, and what I've found is that the POT voltage, once set NEVER varies from your setting......
so, if you start low and slowly work your way up; the plugs and the performance( you want) will tell you when to stop and then just leave it there...
good Luck, JIm
