View Full Version : R80RT without its skin?

Does anyone have a photograph of an R80RT without the fairing and saddlebags? I've acquired a "project" 1984 80RT that is going to require some real love to become a roadworthy vessel, and I'm debating making it into more of a cafe style bike rather than restoring/replacing the fairing.
The bags are missing, as is the windshield, mirrors and the interior components of the fairing (including the gauge cluster) so running it "naked" will definitely be cheaper, but I can't find images of an RT with this treatment.
I guess a better question is, is it even possible to strip down the bodywork and still have all the necessary components for a ridable bike?

It's some what common to find RT's sans their fairings. It does take a little bit of reworking, but it can be done. Search the posts and you'll find plenty of info on this.
In fact, there's one down the page a bit. Here's a link to the thread.

Thanks for the replies guys. Wow, I really like the bike 'sans bodywork'... And the blue color in the photos is a beautiful choice to boot!

The RT is the exact same bike as those originally sold with no fairing or with an S fairing save for how the headlight is mounted. You won't retain the RT headlight mounting in any event.

That blue R80RT is immaculate! Puts my RT to shame. How in the world do you get the engine and wheels so clean? Is it a new paint job too?

mine started life as an '83 R80RT. it was the same blue as the bike above.

Hey Ducati,
Is your headlight bracket a custom fabrication? No tail/brake light or turn signals, eh? This is basically what I'm thinking of doing with my project... Strip it down and make it look lean and mean.

1. nope. /7 parts bin
2. yup. its borderline street legal, but proper use of hand signals should do just fine. many old motorbikes have no turn signals. if you have to have em, some bar end jobs and something on the license plate bracket would suffice.
its a wonderfully fun bike to ride :drink

Here's what my "project" looked like when I rolled it off the trailer and brought it home for the whopping sum of $300...

After about an hour of disassembly work removing the heavily oxidized fairing panels, some leather treatment on the seat and a dose of ArmorAll on the dash and handlebar pad... Huge difference in no time. This project excites me more and more every minute I spend on it.

you sir, paid less for your bike than I did mine. cheers. :drink
if you start parting out all the stuff you remove to cafe the bike you'll make enough cash out of it to buy some nice neato parts or get it painted.

mine was a "lightly" crashed 83 RT, with 9,000 miles. one owner. after i spent beau coup bucks on it with an independent shop here, found out the frame was just ever so slightly tweaked. most would not notice it, i did. the first thing i asked the owner of the shop was make sure the frame was straight before we start this process. he assured me he did. he didn't.....
