From what I have read the Surefoot sidestand is better than a Brown as a replacement for my poor stock stand on my 1980 BMW R65. Does anybody know where I can get one in the United States? Thanks!

I dont have the info you need but there is a guy in Mich who makes a similar style(to Browns)stand and everyone I have talked with likes it.I have his #if you're interested.(Its also cheaper, like $125 or so.)

Surefoot is made in the UK

Motobins is best source

Any USA source, you'll be paying freight from the UK in any event.

Thanks to both of you. I ordered a Surefoot from Motobins, but of course they were out and it's on back order. The shipping is huge, about fifty bucks! I still have time to cancel and try the Michigan if you can give me his #. Thanks.

Boxerworks has the Browns in stock and for $119. I just installed one on my r100 and it took only ten minutes.

While I think that paying over a hundred bucks for what basically amounts to a kickstand is a little extreme, that's the best price I've seen. And I guess if you weigh the price over the option of your 'cycle dropping, it may be worth it.

Not "ragging" specifically on you, but anyone that thinks anything about motorcycling is anything but wildly expensive is kidding themselves.

It's an ego-driven hobby, nothing more, and marketers drool over the profit margins available in this category.

So, what does it say about us when you can buy a kickstand for a Harley-Davidson for $35, and think that one for a BMW at more than three times that price is a good deal? :dunno

Sure you can put a $35 kickstand on a Harley, but it's still only holding up a Harley. I drive my 25 year old airhead daily to work and don't see it as anywhere near "wildly expensive." It's worth a hundred bucks to me to avoid seeing a faithful friend not lying on it's side at the end of the day.

Don't get me wrong... I love my new K1200LT, and wouldn't think of trading it for any other touring motorcycle, but I sure do get tired of paying for the overpriced parts and dealer price gouging that seems to be the accepted practice for BMW motorcycle dealers and parts vendors in this country.

I mean... if I can get a lube, oil and filter service for my 2004 4X4 pickup for $29.95 from my local Dodge dealer, why does the same service for my 2004 BMW motorcycle cost $100 from the BMW dealer? Why did the BMW brand GPS unit for my bike cost $1200, when I can buy the same unit direct from Garmin for $600? Why do J-Pegs cost $350? Why are BMW brand helmets and riding apparel so much more expensive than other brands?

Is the quality of the product that much better? I doubt it! Is the cost of raw materials and manufacturing that much higher? Probably not! Warehousing? Distribution? Shipping? Nope! So, where does that leave us? Why do BMW owners happily pay $119 for a part that others would only pay $35 for?

You can rationalize and try to justify the excessively high prices any way you want. I still call it price gouging!

Oh, by the way... I still haven't seen anyone offering a cure for the infamous collapsing side stand on the KLT.

does not seem fair or right

a co-worker, has a honda, we both needed rear tires, exact same metzler, exact same zize , both on spke wheels, exact same style
both of us can bring th ewheel in, off the bike
he was 26 cheaper then me
why
because he went in adn asked for a metzler for his honda, and I went in and asked for my BMW ??????
who knows

so here is a supply and demand and name question
how come I can get a complet distributor for my chevy , for less then the points plate for my airhead

Many times, Metzeler makes tires specifically for BMW. They have an extra belt in them or something.

Think about supply and demand on the ignition parts. Airhead parts are only going to get more expensive as demand starts to taper off.

With all due respect, my friend, I just don't see the demand for airhead parts tapering off. Even though prices ARE going up for parts, if you consider the true cost basis most of us have in our airheads, they are still a bargain.
