View Full Version : Plugs and Lights
Have a couple of questions I hope someone can answer.
Have a 1983 R100RT which calls for either BoschW 6 D or Champion N 7 Y spark plugs; could not find either. Are there more current #'s for these plugs?
Thinking of adding aux driving/fog lights due to fact I do commute quite a bit when dark and in deer country; reommendations and comments would be appreciated.
To finish would like to comment that I purchased my R 100 RT this past January, it is about to reach 76000 miles, and it seems to run better everytime I ride it.
Can't really help you much -- I'm new to owning a BMW as well. I can however point you in a good direction.

I've spoken to them over the phone with some questions regarding my charging system so that I can add aux lights to my 1995 R100GS. The guys seems to know BMW electrical systems very well, and he has a lot of products to choose from if you decide to upgrade.
The key however, is to determine the output of your alternator (probably somewhere between 200 and 280 Watts) then add up how much load your new lights will add to the system. Don't forget to add in your current loads as well, i.e. driving light, heated vest, GPS, etc.
Hope this helps,
Mike

Doesn't Motorad Elektrik sell a 400W alternator kit for airheads now?
Yeah they do -- it's a new alternator, stator/rotor, diode board. It's manufactured by Omega in China (at least that's where it is assembled). I haven't tried it out, but have seen a couple of posts where people have been pleased with the product.
It's about $600 bucks for the kit.

Based on manufacturer's sites showing cross-references, I found the following alternatives to Bosch W6D and Champion N7YC plugs:
Autolite 4252
Bosch W200T30
NGK BP7ES
NipponDenso W20EX-U
These are all 14mm thread with a 3/4" reach. I'm using the ND plugs in my R75/5.

The new part number for Bosch W6D is W6DC to reflect change to copper center electrode.
Following this number change, Bosch changed numbers again, and the new number is 7594. You'll find W6DC still stamped on the box and the plug, nevertheless.
Your parts supply person is very unhelpful if s/he can't make this cross reference.
BTW, you can go to napaonline.com and type w6dc into the non-NAPA part number box and find what you want.
WARNING Do not let anyone tell you W6DRC is same as W6DC. You cannot use any Bosch plug with "R" in the name, as this means "resistor." Do not use any other brand resistor plug, either. All the resistance you need is built into your plug wires, and straying from this specification risks damage to your ignition system.
Use Bosch plugs because their threads are most compatible with your BMW's threads.
