Great Game! I promised a Canadian friend that I'd pull for Team Canada if the Americans got bumped from the tournament. I even wore the "hat of shame" from a little bet that I lost the last time we played the Canadians. Never, ever bet on Hockey with Canadians...

Good for you for not welshing on the bet Gambrinus.
It is sometimes necessary to acknowledge the superiority of Canadians.

Seeing as how that's likely the last hockey we will see for a
while...
Good game, nice hat. Will you wear it at future BMW functions?

The name makes me want to buy them and give them to my friends! With ad copy like
Great Tasting Spitz are eaten all over Canada and the United States...who could not like them?
But then, there are the actual flavors... Dill pickle sunflower seeds? I mean, sure, I'd try it, but buy and ship a whole bag of them? And what's with holding the Pizza flavored seeds for the Canadian market only?

I chatted with the distributor in Spokane earlier this summer. He said he brings the dill pickle seeds in by the palletload because they are so popular. I thought they sounded weird.

I note in passing that you aren't giving us a personal taste review on either the dill pickle or the pizza flavored seeds...

I only like the seasoned or salsa varieties. And the salted ones when they are personally delivered from a friend in Winnipeg!

As far as Hockey goes, this might be all we have to talk about
for a while (at least those of us w/o jr teams). Unless of course
you want to hear about the latest adult E teams (bottom of the
local adult league games) I officiate.

Yes,the NHL lockout is sounding like a bummer.
There was a made for tv in Canada movie a few years ago that purported to tell the truth about how the League connived to defeat and fully exploit the players'early efforts to organize,in the 50s I think.
It portrayed the then owners as ruthless, dishonest and unscrupulous...no rebuttal that I have heard about..
How about hockey players making 1.2 million a year, average salary.? That's in USD I believe.
Anyone think they are the problem?

It's news in San Jose. They were talking to the various bar and
food folks today. If you figure each team has an average of
80 home games at 12-20K people at each game; the small
businessman is going to lose big time.
Then you have the venue and their people who will be out of
work. Let's not forget the referees/linesman/off-ice officials/Front
office folks that are all out of work for the duration (layoff notices
for 150 of 300 NHL employees went out today as well).
Ticket prices keep going up to support player salaries. And
people keep paying. A player's agent negotiates that grand
salary (and the team accepts that cost) and now the owners
are complaining? What ever happened to business accumen?
I don't fault the player much. After all, he's just trying to do
what's right for him. The sad fact is that those inflated numbers
do have an effect on what the noob gets as well as the player
who ends up in arbitration. A player's contract also contains
provisions that will almost guarantee they won't make all
$1.2M unless the planets are all in alignment.
Then you've got the various Canadian teams that moved
South to compete for the salaries, etc.

Interesting provocative reply.
How long do hockey players last?
10 years?
and what sorts of pensions do they have?
Ask Mr Hockey,Gordie Howe.
How much money did he make for his owners?
How much did they pay him?
How much is his pension?
How much does an NHL franchise make?
And why do they make it?
The old Marxist dilemma:who owns the profit-the capitalist?or the labourer?

I'll say this. If you last in the NHL (and that's the key), you'll get
something of a pension. Why? Player's Union.
Regardless. Marquee players are not as "important" these
days (my opinion).
Nothing like players of old that played for the same team for
a period of years and gave owners a measurable earning
power. As far as that goes, people like Gordie Howe got
screwed im comparison to today's player.
Today's players play for whom ever will pay them.
They are "smarter" in that they have agents to do their
negotiating.
Let's do some quick math just to make things interesting.
HP Pavillion seats 17,000. The average ticket price is around
$60 so that's $1.02M per game or $81.6M/year in ticket sales.
Not sure who gets parking revenue but it's $20 per car with
1,800 on-site spaces. Or $36K/night.
There are 28 rostered players on the Sharks. At $1.2M each,
that's $33.6M a season. Leaving $48M of the ticket sales. As a
percentage of gross revenue, that's a good chunk. Then there
are the development teams, front office staff, rent on the building
(re-negotitated a while back too) and other costs.
Who's getting screwed? Players or Owners? I think the fans.
Hockey has enjoyed a strong following here in SJC. A season
with no hockey is likely to leave fans looking for something
else. No professional sports team can survive without butts
in seats.
