Folks, I have a 1984 R100RS. The fairing doesn't seem to be mounted correctly. Can someone help me with proper measurements. What should be the proper distance from front axle to front nose of the fairing? How far should the fairing instrument panel be from the tac/speedo cluster etc? Any comment on how to best set up the fairing would be appreciated. Thanks

Well, it's pretty hard to mismount the fairing on the front bracket. If things don't look right, I'd possibly suspect a tweaked bracket, but read on.

The bottom mount corresponds with the threaded inserts in the fairing and the "forked" ends should be inserted completly over the bolts. There is no adjustment at the top, as the bracket must align with holes for mirror mounts. The bracket bolts directly to the steering head, no spacers, etc. between the two. All in all, there's no adjustment.

It's maybe a bit less well known, but the instrument cluster mounting bracket is different for the RS than any other Airhead, adjusting the angle of the instruments to correspond with the riding position provided by the handlebars. The bracket mounts beneath the top triple clamp, with rubber vibration dampers. Relationships can get pretty screwed up attempting to mount an aftermarket top triple clamp, and for me this wouldn't work due to conflict between clutch cable adjuster and speedo cable connector when I postioned clutch lever where I needed it.

The fork tubes nominally come out centered in the openings. The rear cross brace or fairing mount should just be clamped to the frame where it needs to be once things up front are correct, level, etc.

Even then, it seems, the lower lower (!) mounts aren't going to line up if something else is wrong or misinstalled. The top faces of those brackets ought to be very nearly parallel with the top frame as well as the exhaust headers in the same vicinity. If they are, it's hard to see how much else can be wrong. They come "up" from the engine mount bolts, of course.

Ikcris, your point well taken. I think the mount is the problem. The bike did a roll over and basically squashed the fairing. I've fixed the fairing, but the of the mount must have been shoved back. Looking to find what the original spec on the mount should be and how it should be measured. Thanks
