MotoGP comes to Laguna Seca ( http://www.mazdaraceway.com/) this weekend to contest the eight round of that championship series. American fans celebrating the holiday weekend at Laguna Seca should be in for some good on track fireworks.
Nine points separate the top three riders. The rest of the pack is sixty two points or more behind the podium leaders at this point. On paper that would seem to be a formula for a boring race but for anyone who has followed the season on TV they know the season has produced some great racing.
Fiat Yamaha riders lead with Valentino Rossi currently in first and Jorge Lorenzo in second position in the standings. Casey Stoner’s Ducati is holding down the third spot in the standings. Dani Pedros, the second Ducati team rider is currently in fifth. However; he has been hampered by injuries in the past and is reported to be fit for this race and could be a factor in upsetting Fiat Yamaha’s desire to continue its string of 1,2 finishes to a hat trick at Laguna Seca.
When the green flag drops on Sunday’s race Rossi will set another record if he is on the starting grid. At Assen Rossi joined legendary Giacomo Agostini as the only motorcycle GP riders to score 100 victories. This weekend Rossi will tie Alex Barros for the GP Ironman title of 158 GP starts if he in fact makes the grid in any position. A victory for Rossi would move him one race closer to the 22 victories he needs to tie Agostini’s 122 GP victory record.
To the pleasure of fans the Fiat Yamaha team does not have team orders guarantying Rossi preference. Lorenzo and Rossi have been swapping positions race after race. This weekend should be no different. While Rossi took the victory last year Lorenzo exited the race by crashing. But that was last year and he was in a very different point in his career development. His performance going into this race weekend should have him confident to compete.
Ducati has taken a back seat to the recent Yamaha show. Stoner has been ill for the last two races. While he has been able to race his performance has not been up to snuff. Hopefully he will be back in form. Pedrosa has been dealing with a hip injury that has severely hindered his riding. Reports have him confident he is in shape for this race. The Ducati has been a contender when the riders are fit.
Good racing is in store for this holiday weekend.

Saturday qualifying was full of drama which continues on to this morning. The grid has been set with qualifying times but it will be up to the doctors to see if pole winner Lorenzo will be able to race today.
Jorge Lorenzo took the pole (http://www.motogp.com/en/Results+Statistics/2009/USA/MotoGP/QP) and crashed shortly after. Less than a second separates the top 10 qualifiers with teammate Rossi 0.167 and Casey Stoner on his Ducati 0.232 adrift of the pole time.
Lorenzo crashed twice in qualifying. The first a low side get off that allowed him to continue on to win the pole position. The second crash, a high side get off, had Lorenzo carried away to the track clinic with a separated shoulder. It will be up to track physicians and officials to decide this morning if the Spaniard will be able to race today. Sunday’s twenty minute MotoGP warm up begins a 9:40 AM Pacific time. We will know then if he past his medical and feels up to riding.
Stoner continues to have medical problems. His mysterious medical condition has flared up again this weekend. A new treatment was begun coming into the race weekend which has had no positive impact and in some reports is described to leave him sicker than before. This problem was compounded by bumps and bruises he suffered in a qualifying crash of his own.
Tires are being blamed for Lorenzo’s and others crashes. Bridgestone brought a hard compound for the race. Riders complained about problems getting them up to a working temperature and a resulting lack of grip.
The race will be shown on FOX. My listing shows a 5PM eastern show time. Check your local listings. (http://www.tvguide.com/detail/tv-show.aspx?id=4722317)

Thanks! Looking forward to the race later today. Don't see how it can top last year's MotoGP races for the ages but we'll see.
Pity about Lorenzo crashing. Guess a major difference between a legend like Rossi and superb talents like Lorenzo and Pedrosa is Rossi is learning to keep on the safe side of the razor edge. Stoner seemed to have learnt that after his first year in MotoGP. I cringe everytime Pedrosa crashes. Little guy is amazing riding so hard hurt. Maybe nuts too ... but that's what makes them what they are.
Go ROSSI!!

Lorenzo was slower in Sunday MotoGP warm ups but back on the track. Stoner led the warm up session times with Rossi, Pedrosa, Edwards and Lorenzo following in that order.

I watched qualifying last night and saw both high-sides, each was extremely violent and similar in that the bikes virtually spun 180 degrees out before launching their riders. Ugly. Hopefully, they "get a grip" for the race shortly.
Dani Pedrosa on his Repsol Honda took the early lead from the pole. In the early laps Rossi first then Stoner dueled for the second position. Jorge Lorenzo had a slow start from pole was slow off the mark and found himself having to work back to 5th position.
Talmacsi’ Scot Racing Team Yamaha was the first rider to loose grip and crashed in turn nine of lap six.
Capirossi was next to suffering problems. After climbing back on his bike he did feel he could continue with the race.
Andrea Dovizioso on a Repsol Honda and running in P5 through his bike off the track next.
On the same lap Sete Gibernau on his Ducati was the last to crash.
With more than 25 laps to go there were four riders out. Tires remain the primary suspect of the problems. Bridgestone supplied a hard single compound tire that did not seem to work with the track at all this weekend. In a starting grid diminished by world economics this year it is a shame to see it further shrunk by tire issues.
21 laps remaining Rossi was able to get around Stoner for P2. Pedrosa continued his charged in the lead with a 2.81 second lead. With 17 laps to go the racing fight was
James Toseland on his Tech3 Monster Yamaha was black flagged with 17 laps to go. Officials said he jumped the start then failed to comply with a pit lane ride through penalty in time and was taken out the race.
12 laps to go and Rossi was building a lead on Stoner. The Ducati rider was having to deal with Jorge Lorenzo and his Fiat Yamaha who had worked his way up to P4. Just before crossing the start finish line to tick the lap count to 11 remaining Lorenzo passed Stoner for P3.
9 laps to go Pedrosa was still holding a 3.12 second lead over Rossi who previously had been gaining. Lorenzo was increasing the gap on Stoner in P4 while reeling in teammate Rossi at the same time.
Dang! According to the clock on my computer the race started about 36 minutes ago but thanks to Fox I think we have only seen 15 minutes of racing. When the live coverage returned from local commercials I was treated to race commentators pitching Major League Baseball. Good Grief, what’s up with that
4 Laps to go Lorenzo ducked pass Rossi for P2 only to run to deep into the corner going wide and Rossi took the position back.
3 laps remain the lead was down to 1.976 seconds.
2 laps to go the gap to the lead was back over 2 seconds.
1 lap to go
Pedrosa
Rossi
Lorenzo
Stoner
Pedrosa was able to hold off Rossi whose last minute charge had him losing the drag race from the last turn to the finish line. Pedrosa and Honda are on the top of the podium with Rossi in P2 and Lorenzo in P3. Stoner in P4 and Nickey Haden in P5. Colin Edwards the other American in the race finished in P7.
Rossi continues to lead the Championship standings after Laguna Seca. Lorenzo and Stoner follow in that order for the remaining podium standings as they stand now. After that the standing shift around.
The race began at the top of the hour and at the top of the following hour my local Fox channel went to paid programming.

Not a bad race, but other than Pedrosa nearly letting himself get caught off guard by The Doctor, nowhere near as exciting as the past couple, or last year's race at Laguna.
I agree about Fox's coverage, they were barely in time for the start, and it just got worse from there. Speaking to the audience as if we've never seen a motorcycle race before was a really thoughtful thouch. :rolleyes
I'm glad the rest will be back on Speed.

I could not believe that with access to Casey Stoner's back up bike the only thing they could do was explain the massive piece of carbon fiber the announcer was hiding was called a swing arm. GIVE ME A BREAK! I watched the race with my soon to be second grade 'pit crew member'. She looked at me after that and said "that was really dumb wasn't it Mika" On second thought I shouldn't diss the guy, his coverage gave my granddaughter one of the best lines of the race coverage.

One of the (really) downsides to when MotoGP and WSB comes to the US is that means network coverage. They shorten it so much that as soon as the program starts the race begins and they assume everyone is an idiot. I'm glad Greg White explained what a swingarm is. They also don't seem to know the riders very well. The racing's fun to watch, but the announcing makes me long for Jonathan Green - how bad is that?
I'll be at the Indy GP again this year so at least I won't have to watch network coverage.

The Donington race was a very intriguing if a bit strange race to watch. Tire selection played a huger role in the outcome. The skies threatened and did deliver rain but not in the quantities to have officials declare it a wet race. Ducati and Suzuki took a gamble and started on wet tires. The gamble did not pay off. Riders on slicks seemed to have the advantage if not speed at times until Lorenzo went down and out of the race. Rossi took a dive but was able to rejoin and others had their time riding on the side of their fairings instead of the wheels.

Well glad the Lorenzo thing is straightened out. Not a Stoner fan but I'm beginning to feel a bit for the guy. That might pass.
GO ROSSI!!!!! Off to Indy in a couple days. Can't wait.

I hope Stoner recovers and remains in MotoGP, with Ducati. As much as I like Rossi, I'll be the first to admit the racing was getting boring when he had no competition, just like the Schumcher-led parades that turned me off of Formula One a few years ago. (Even Val himself seemed bored and ready for another challenge a few years ago, simply changing machines was only a brief solution.) Guys like Stoner, and Sete Gibernau before him, made the racing more challenging for Valentino, and therefore more exciting for us.
Casey deserves credit in my book, because he clearly dispelled the suggestions that the Ducati would have been dominant with anyone aboard. It's apparent that the thing requires something special in a rider to take advantage of its strengths and win with, something that makes him a threat every time he rides it.
If he's less "personable", I don't mind. Val has enough personality for both of them, at least. It's fitting that his arch-rival is virtually his polar opposite.

I think Indy is his best shot. I'm predicting an American in top 5 at Indy (plus 2 Italians, 2 Spaniards) - but that American could be Edwards. Barring that Nicky would need rain or crashes/mechanical problems with the perennial front runners for him to podium. I hope Nicky proves me wrong.

There's one bend that seems to be throwing riders off.
Edwards and a whole bunch of the 250 top riders went down. It appears to be due to a series of small "ripples" that combined with the bikes being fully leaned over and some still trailing front brake, creates a combination that washes out the front end.
I hope Edwards does well, but need Lorenzo to win as my fantasy race team under achieved at the last round. "Oi Kallio, get that Ducati up in the points".
250s, big Bautista fan, but he wasn't quite on it yesterday.

Unfortunately you were prophetic. Both Pedrosa and Rossi lost it in that area. Quite a few 250cc riders lost it there last year as well. I was in the Ducati grandstand which faces that area. Saw Rossi run a bit wide, turned to a friend and said 'Oh Oh, he's wide' ... next I knew he was out. He routinely recovers from being off line at other tracks when pushing it. The approach to that slow right is unforgiving and aside from bumps, as Rossi found out traction not as good either just being off a couple feet or so.

Open letter from the FIM President Vito Ippolito to riders - Race with Fair Play!
29/09/09 - 16:50
Ladies and gentlemen,
Following many incidents between riders that have taken place during races since the beginning of the season and comments made by riders that were published by the media, as FIM President, I would like to make the following remarks:
Our sport has the privilege of being seen on TV by millions of viewers and covered by hundreds of media worldwide. Our fans admire the riders' courage and talent. These are two key ingredients that make us one of the most popular sports in the world.
Riders must also be highly focused, have very strong nerves and make correct decisions in order to make a successful career. Of course, this supreme effort exhausts physical and mental reserves and, as a consequence, it is possible to make mistakes. But this state of "agonistic trance" cannot excuse unfair behaviour in competition, as we have seen recently. This is precisely why this kind of behaviour must be severely punished. But worse yet is what has just happened when the lack of fair play extends beyond competition, with vulgar and offensive remarks towards the opponents. This is even more unforgivable.
We must show to our huge audience not only how spectacular our sport is, but also how important fair play is to us. Most riders are respectful of sporting, moral and ethical values. Therefore, we cannot allow anyone achieve victory or act unfairly or dishonestly. I really hope that this will not happen again and that the spirit of chivalry which has always distinguished our champions will prevail.
If such incidents take place in the future, it is clear that the FIM will not hesitate to intervene and take necessary disciplinary action against the riders concerned.
Yours sincerely,
Vito Ippolito
President

Yamaha-moto-europe.com: Rossi takes ninth championship title with brilliant podium after dramatic Malaysian GP
The indomitable and irrepressible Valentino Rossi took his ninth World Championship crown in Malaysia today, riding to third place in a dramatic rain-hit race at Sepang. It was the Italian's seventh title in the premier class, his fourth for Yamaha - more than he has won with any other manufacturer - and his 163rd career podium. His Fiat Yamaha team-mate Jorge Lorenzo was forced to start from the back of the grid after a sighting lap problem but he recovered brilliantly and rode a superb race to chase Rossi home in fourth place.
After three dry practice sessions the heavens opened thirty minutes before the race started and a torrential downpour ensued. The race was delayed forty-five minutes, by which time the rain had abated to a steady drizzle, but with no wet track time during practice the race had become something of a lottery. Rossi seemed to get away well but at turn one he ran wide and exited in eighth position. He then surrendered two more places, including one to his charging team-mate, and finished the first lap in tenth. For the next few laps he tailed Lorenzo as the Spaniard charged his way through the field, the pair putting on a scintillating display of overtaking in the wet until they arrived in fourth and fifth on the seventh lap. Rossi now set his sights on a podium and passed Lorenzo, surviving a huge slide in the process, before quickly pulling a gap of a second on his team-mate. He slowly began to close the gap to Andrea Dovizioso in third and looked like he would soon be within striking distance when his fellow Italian slid out, leaving Rossi in the final podium spot. He didn't give up there however and started to reel in Dani Pedrosa, who was second, but with the track by then almost dry and the championship in the bag he decided in the final few laps to take the safe option and came home behind the Spaniard, with Casey Stoner the clear winner out in front.
Lorenzo's troubles began when a problem with his race bike meant he had to switch to his spare at the last minute, meaning he left the pit lane a little late. He planned to do two sighting laps, as Rossi had, to get a better feel for the wet track but by the time he came through for the second one the pit lane had closed, meaning he then had to start from the back of the grid. The 22-year-old surged through the field at the start however and rode one of the races of his life to pass twelve riders and come home fourth behind Rossi. Lorenzo will clinch second place in the championship by taking just one point at the final round in Valencia, in two week's time.
Valentino Rossi - Position: 3rd Time: +19.385
"It's great to be World Champion again, I am very proud to have done this nine times in my career. I want to thank everyone in my team, Furusawa-san, Davide Brivio, Lin Jarvis, Jeremy...everybody! This season has been very hard and Lorenzo especially has pushed me to new limits, but I think it's been a great duel for everyone to watch. Today was unbelievable, when the rain came it was scary for everyone because all the work we'd done was then useless and we were riding ‘blind' with the setting. I made a mistake at the first corner and then I was a long way back, so I think I did a great race to finish third! I was going to try to pass Dovizioso when he fell and then for a few laps I thought I would try to get Pedrosa but with wet tyres on a drying track it was a bit risky by then and so I decided to be safe. It's a fantastic feeling to take this title with Yamaha again and I also must thank Bridgestone, who have done a great job with the tyres all year. My celebration was because in Italy we say an old chicken makes good soup but can no longer lay eggs! I am like the old chicken - 30 years now - but I have made another egg! That's nine!"
Jorge Lorenzo - Position: 4th Time: +25.850
"I want to start by giving my congratulations to Valentino and all his team. He is the champion. As for the race, today was a difficult day. We improved in the warm-up and I was hoping to have a good race, but when it started to rain we had problems to turn on the bike. We had planned to ride two laps, but I didn't have enough time and the pit-lane was closed. Then had to begin from last position, but I did one of my best ever starts! The first corner was incredible, but as time went on I began to have some grip problems, like during the whole weekend. However it was a great race for me in difficult circumstances and we finished fourth, not so bad. It's been a great season and I could never have expected to be fighting with Valentino like this so early in my career. Now I just need one point in Valencia and I will have my goal of being the vice-champion."
Davide Brivio - Team Manager
"Every year is special but this year was very interesting because we realised from the start of the season that our strongest rival was in our garage! It hasn't been easy but it's been a fascinating season for everyone and we are very proud at Yamaha. We have to give huge congratulations to Valentino because this year we've seen him work harder than ever, and when the level goes up he puts even more effort in and this means that we, too, have all had to work even harder to keep up with him! Working with Valentino is always great fun and we are very lucky in our team. Today he showed his talent once again after a bad start to come home on the podium and we are so happy that all our work has paid off. Congratulations to Valentino and thank you to everyone in the team, at Yamaha and at Bridgestone for a fantastic job."
Daniele Romagnoli - Team Manager
"Congratulations to Valentino for his ninth title! We've given everything we have this year to make his life difficult on track but now he has won and he deserves this victory. This year has been great for Jorge and today he did a brilliant race from last on the grid. Unfortunately we had trouble with the race bike and had to change to the back-up one, and then Jorge wasn't in time to exit the pit lane after his second sighting lap. It was a pity but he put on an exciting show and did so well to finish fourth. Now we will focus on confirming the second place in Valencia and then look forward to next year, when I am sure Jorge will be even stronger."
Edwards and Toseland collect points in Sepang
Colin Edwards remains firmly in the hunt for a top five world championship finish in 2009 after a tough Malaysian MotoGP race this afternoon.
Optimistic of a top six challenge in the dry, two days of hard work and preparation in hot and humid conditions counted for nothing after a torrential downpour saturated the 5.548km circuit just 30 minutes before the scheduled start of the 21-lap race.
The deluge forced Race Direction to delay the start for 40 minutes but once underway, Edwards was mounting a determined challenge for a top ten in front of 59,206 fans when he encountered small front-end issues with the wet setting on his Monster Yamaha YZR-M1.
He climbed as high as 12th place on lap 13 but was unable to maintain his pace in much cooler conditions than normal for the Malaysian GP, the intervention of the rain dropping temperatures to 27 degrees.
Edwards ended the penultimate race of the campaign in 13th position, the American closing the gap on Andrea Dovizioso in fifth in the overall standings to just four points heading to the season's final race in Valencia on November 8.
British rider James Toseland ended a difficult weekend with 15th position to extend his impressive points-scoring run to seven successive races. The 28-year-old also ran into front-end grip problems but fought hard in tricky conditions to claim a single point, Toseland confident he can finish the season in style at Valencia next month.
Colin Edwards - Position: 13th Time: +1'10.778
“The weekend wasn't great to be honest. The bike wasn't fast in the dry for some reason and I just couldn't get going all weekend. We tried a different setting this morning and it felt better, but it certainly wasn't a miracle spark. But with the rain coming like it did it just made it a guessing game. I did two warm-up laps behind Valentino (Rossi) p to check the conditions and from that moment the front feeling wasn't great. Even then I was worried I wouldn't be able to get any weight on the front and that's exactly what happened. I could carry the lean angle I wanted but the front wouldn't load at all, so I couldn't get the bike turned. When it was properly wet I felt like I was upping my pace and closing in on the group for tenth, but then the tyres started heating up and I was sideways all of the time. In the final laps I was losing a lot of time. I'm going to Valencia still fighting for fifth in the championship wi th (Andrea) Dovizioso) crashing, but I don't like taking profit from the mistakes of other people. I just want to say congratulations to Yamaha and Valentino. He's done another amazing job and nine world titles is just a phenomenal achievement."
James Toseland - Position: 15th Time: +1'50.672
“I wasn't too sorry when I saw the rain to be honest because it had been a tough weekend in the dry. We went with the base wet setting but I had the same problem in the rain that I did in the dry. I just didn't have any grip on the rear and in the wet the problem was on corner entry to the apex. So my corner speed was just way too slow to make a decent lap time. I am not out there just riding around at the back. I was doing my absolute best and trying my hardest but it was impossible for me to go any faster with the feeling I had. It has been a tough weekend but I'll look to bounce back and finish strongly in Valencia for my guys at Monster Yamaha Tech 3."
Herve Poncharal – Team Manager
“It has been a very disappointing weekend and easily the worst for us this season. We were struggling in the dry so I can't say I was unhappy to see the rain because I thought this would give us a chance of improving our results. Unfortunately our performance was even worse in the rain and we can't be happy. Now we have to understand why we struggled so much this weekend. The only good thing is that we go to Valencia with Colin still fighting for fifth in the championship and the whole team is motivated to finish the season on a positive note. Finally I'd like to pass on my congratulations to Valentino and Yamaha. They have done another incredible job this season. Valentino has proven once again what a formidable rider he is, and Yamaha has undoubtedly the most dominant bike in MotoGP."
Further quotes from Valentino Rossi following his ninth World Championship title
"Nine world champpionships is a great achievement, I'm so happy! I would need one hour to thank everyone! Starting with everyone at Yamaha - Furusawa-san, Lin Jarvis, Davide Brivio and all my guys, especially Jeremy. I couldn't have done it without Jeremy and he is like my motorcycle father! I also have to thank my family and friends - Stefania, Graziano, Uccio, Albi...so many! All the team, Yamaha and Bridgestone; together we've done a great, great job and it's always a huge enjoyment to ride and work with these people. In order to stay at this level through a whole season you have to be calm and have the right people around you and this is what I have. We've stayed concentrated and focused even in the bad moments, so we can congratulate ourselves with this ninth title.
"Today without the rain it could have been a brilliant race, with the four top riders fighting together, but the rain changed it, all our work was thrown away and we had to start with a bike we didn't know so well. I made a good start but I made a mistake in braking, it felt like I was braking for one year and I went wide! Of course I wanted to win but after the first corner it was difficult with Casey so strong so I went for the podium. I really enjoyed the race and I think it was great to watch.
"After Dovizioso unfortunately crashed I tried to go with Dani but then he started to push and I already had the podium, so I decided to take it a bit easier. I was happy to risk a little for the podium, but it wasn't sensible to keep taking risks for second when the championship was safe.
"The t-shirt and the celebration is called the ‘Gallina Vecchia!" In Italian we say that the old chicken makes good soup, but it's no use for laying eggs. I am old now, 30, but this old hen has made another egg today and now we have nine! As usual I thought it up at home in Tavullia, together with my fan club, and we had great fun designing the t-shirt and the helmet.
"It's been a great season, for sure one of the hardest at times. It's been harder than last year, when we won after two difficult years, but we've had some troubles this year at times and I have had a very hard rival in my team-mate Lorenzo. He has pushed me to new levels and I think it's been a great duel to the end. There have been some bad moments, like Portugal when we weren't at 100%, but we have worked well. Lorenzo has done a great job to put this pressure on us so I have to say well done to him.
"This season we've had a mono-tyre rule but we have still improved the lap record in many laps and this shows that we've all been on the limit all season. This is why we've all made mistakes; this is to be expected when you have four riders fighting together.
"The best moment of the season for me, the best emotion, was the last pass in the last corner at Barcelona. This was the most exciting moment of the championship for me, one of the best for many years I think! The worst moment was probably the stupid error and crash in Indianapolis, but this led to the perfect win in Misano in front of all the fans so in the end it was okay!
"I still feel just as motivated as ever. I still have a great passion to ride better and better, to be on my bike and to win. I enjoy always trying to improve and to work with my team to do this. I am 30 but I still feel great emotion and great satisfaction from success. My passion for motorcycles is what keeps me enjoying every race and helps me to keep pushing even though I am the oldest of these first top guys. I have to train harder and work harder to stay focused now, but I still enjoy the challenge as much as ever.
"I think next year will be very, very hard. We're all on the same bikes and I think it will be between me, Lorenzo, Stoner and Pedrosa again. On Tuesday in Valencia we will try the new model and I am looking forward to working on the new M1, but I have the greatest rival in my team so it won't be easy!
"Every championship is special for different reasons, it's unforgettable every time and this day is no different. I'm World Champion once again and now I want to go and party!"
In 2010 Valentino Rossi has continued to grow his legend and cement his place in the history of Grand Prix Motorcycle Racing. The Italian's ninth career title is his seventh in the premier-class and his fourth since joining Yamaha in 2004. Here are some more statistics from the fourteenth season of his career:
• Rossi has now matched Mike Hailwood and Carlo Ubbiali with nine titles in all classes. Only Agostini with 15 has more.
• Rossi's win in Assen this season made him only the second rider in history to take 100 wins in all classes. Rossi now has 103, 19 less than Agostini's all-time record of 122.
• He already held the all-time premier class victories record, having beaten Agostini's tally at Indianapolis in 2008. He now a premier-class win tally of 77.
• Rossi's win this season in Brno saw him take the all-time podium record with his 160th podium in all classes. He is also the only rider to have stood on the podium in the premier-class more than 100 times. Today's podium was his 163rd in all classes.
• With 44 wins from 102 races since he joined the Japanese factory in 2004, Rossi is the most successful Yamaha rider of all time. He has 21 more wins than Kenny Roberts, Yamaha's next most successful rider.
• Today's title means he has now won more titles for Yamaha than for any of the other manufacturers he has ridden for in his career.
• His win at Misano, Italy this year was his 11th win in all classes on home soil.
• He is the only rider in history to have won at least one GP in 14 successive seasons.
Other facts about Rossi's career
• In 1997 Rossi became the second youngest ever 125cc World Champion after scoring 321 points and eleven wins.
• Two years later, he became the youngest ever 250cc World Champion with nine wins.
• In 2001 Rossi joined Phil Read as one of only two riders ever to win the 125cc, 250cc and 500cc titles.
• Rossi's debut victory for Yamaha at the opening race of 2004 in South Africa made him the first rider in history to take back-to-back wins for different manufacturers.
• After winning the MotoGP World Championship three times with Honda, Rossi took his fourth premier-class title with Yamaha in 2004 and became the only rider other than Eddie Lawson to win consecutive premier-class titles for different manufacturers.
• Rossi remains the only rider to win the premier-class title on four different types of motorcycle: 500cc 4-cylinder two-stroke, 990cc 5-cylinder four-stroke, Yamaha 990cc 4-cylinder four-stroke and a Yamaha 800cc 4-cylinder four-stroke.
• Rossi has never missed a GP since his 125cc debut in 1996. He has started 226 successive races in all classes, 166 of which have been in the premier class. Both of these are records.

Whew! And congratulations to the great Valentino. He had me on edge riding that hard in the wet when he didn't need to, to win the world title. But that's part of what makes him who he is.
And still seem as thrilled as if it was his 1st championship.

Friday practice should begin shortly in Valencia and may be over with by the time you get around to checking in. I don’t plan on a report this evening but will be up for qualifying on Saturday.
The Valencia race may be turn out to be the exclamation point on the Fiat Yamaha season, the hate trick race for Stoner or the first shot at MotoGP glory if Ben Spies can pull of his version of the Miracle on Ice. What ever happens in the MotoGP ranks it is the final GP for the 250cc class. The agile 100lb/100hp machines have always put on a great show and the last one should be no different.

What a 'Wild Card' weekend for Ben Spies. 18th in his first practice he was 5th in warmups today finishing in the top 10 with a P7. It's only one race and the there will be many a slip between cup and lip before any rider tastes the 2010 MotoGP Championship champagne, but it looks like we will have a Yank in the thick of the hunt.

Official Results (http://resources.motogp.com/files/results/xx/2009/VAL/MotoGP/RAC/Classification.pdf)
On Saturday Dani Pedrosa told reporters his race day hope was for a fast start and to hold off competition. The other riders had their plans also.
Sunday morning was cold to start with and Casey Stoner (http://www.motogp.com/en/news/2009/motogp+warm+up+Valencia) was on top of the warm up charts (http://www.motogp.com/en/Results+Statistics/2009/VAL/MotoGP/WUP). Our hero Ben Spies improved his performance once again. When the session was done he was in 5th place ahead of Jorge Lorenzo and with a gap of only 0.967 between his best time and Stoner’s.
All of the events leading up to the race pointed to a Stoner Hat trick to finish the season, but the final results of a race weekend are determined by the race results. Anything can happen during a race and everything that lead up to that point becomes filler to race results. That is why they hold the races.
The grid lined up and took off for its warm up lap before the start of the race. Stoner high sided on this lap and was unable to return to the grid for the start of the race. Jorge Lorenzo almost did the same thing. Stoner’s exit set Pedrosa up for his fast start and he took advantage of it and turned it into a race win. Off the track things are getting interesting at Yamaha. In old TV sitcoms Three’s Company but at the Yamaha teams it sounding like three is a crowd. The news from Yamaha Racing during the year has been full of Rossi and Lorenzo in MotoGP and Ben Spies over in World Superbike; until this weekend when Spies made his MotoGP wild card debut after wining his WSBK Championship. Rossi has handed an ultimatum to Yamaha (http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/motorsport/motorbikes/8349264.stm) for Jorge Lorenzo to be dropped by the team or he just may go ride for Ducati.
"I could change bike, ride for Ducati and try to win the world championship with an Italian bike. That would be a great motivation.
"But I prefer at this moment to stay with Yamaha because the love between me and Yamaha, our relationship, is something special.
"To change bike would feel unfaithful. So for Yamaha it is important that I finish my career with them and for me it is also important. "
The nine time champion has always been great at generating stories filled with bravado. It would be easy to discount this as the Yamaha alpha dog marking his territory as new dog Ben Spies enters the Yamaha MotoGP camp.
Monday Rossi’s attorneys will dash a letter off to him explaining the complications of his contract with Yamaha after checking to make certain his retainer is paid up to date. The press will write stories and rumors will fill the internet. While we will dismiss most as alpha behavior out of Rossi because of the challenge of Lorenzo and Spies to his dominance I think we will be only partly correct.
Events this past week in Japan may have more to do with Rossi’s most recent out break of bravado. Rather than feeling threatened on the track by Lorenzo and Spies he may feel a threat on the balance sheet that would make it harder to deal with a resurgent Stoner or Pedrosa. Yamaha appears to be committed to the premier class along with WSBK. However; recent draconian cuts in other racing programs, Yamaha reporting major financial loss and the stepping down of is head are not lost on the cleaver Rossi. The alpha dog may be marking his turf for the new head of Yamaha and his minions to see as they pilot the company forward into the 2010 racing and motorcycle selling season.

Including all disclaimers that this is only one day of testing and Spies own admission that he has much work to do; Ben Spies is doing that work an impressive manner. On a new bike with a new team he is making steady improvements. 2010 will go a long way toward raising the interest of Americans in MotoGP.
