I went for a short trip to Long Neck Delaware via the Cape May-Lewes ferry. I had never taken a ferry ride before and this was the perfect way to cut about 125 miles off my trip and give my butt a break from riding. I took the Garden State Parkway all the way to the southern end and got on the boat in Cape May--motorcycles get speacial placement in front of the cars...I was the first one on the boat and the 3rd one off!

Here's one of my bride (of 32 years!) and me, getting supplies at the Speculator general store in far northern NY state. Went to the Americade in Lake George, and continued from there into Quebec.

Great weather, but had to use the heated grips in the mornings up north!

Local Square Route Rally where it rained the entire time! (but still fun)
(no pic’s)

Bunch of day/weekend rides to nowhere in particular

Just last weekend I went up to Thurmont for the 2004 Nostalgia Run and road with these bikes, on a nice 70 mile putt through the mountains of upper MD and lower PA. Man I love these old machines, the funkier the better!

This is a mid 50’s BMW, well the motor and frame anyway, the rest of it is well, anyones guess, but not bad for $50, in running (more or less) condition.!

and a Monkey Wards,

were among the group I rode with.

There was also a very nice Arial Square Four

you can see more of the 2004 event at my web site here (http://roadrunes.com/mainbody)
then click on photos and Nostalgia Run 2004, also have shots from some rides on Sat and Sun Aug 7 and 8 where I did around 800 miles on my two air heads.

So yeah it’s been a good summer and like I said, it ain’t over yet! (least not in these parts!)

9/12 still counts as summer, doesn't it? It was 85 degrees and in Michigan that is summer.
I was on my way out to cover the NMRA Ford National event at the US 131 Motorsports Park and came across this gang of hell raisers tearing up a county road.
There were four couples and they ride together every Sunday. They started out with 10-15 mile jaunts and worked up to 100 mile loops on their 49 cc scooters. (Our kinda people huh? Increasing their milage all the time.)
I learned a lot about scooters and the laws that apply to them in Michigan and enjoyed meeting these people. (Now I never would have met them if I was a slab riding kind of guy on account of they are not allowed on the freeway.)
One of the guys confessed to hopping up some of the scooters so they will exceed the legal limit of 40 mph in Michigan. (Sorry Dan Z, but none of them had Screemin' Eagle kits installed yet - so I told them to call my dad!) These cruise at 35-40 mph and get around 100 mpg so they ride their ride on a gallon of gas.

Cliffy777

Ended up writing a story for the local paper:

We first encountered this gang of two wheeled riders just south of Shelbyville on a sunny Sunday. There were eight of them rolling along in formation and we pulled in behind and tailed them until they pulled into a gas station in Martin for a break.
They rode similar looking vehicles but there was no evidence of “colors” in their outfits because no two of them were dressed alike. Some wore helmets and some didn’t – which is okay according to Michigan law because they were riding 49 cc mopeds or scooters. The gang was made up of three couples from Shelbyville and a couple from Caledonia. Leading the pack was Jim Magee with his wife Linda falling in behind. Also from Shelbyville were members Dwight and Anna Bixler and Bob and Mary Schwab. Stan and Bel Bogus are from Caledonia – and this ride was their initiation. (It was rumored that their initiation involved buying gas for all the members that day, but like most gangs this one was somewhat secret about the inner working of the organization.)
The group was on their way to Paw Paw on a trip that would be about 100 miles total for them. When four of them first went out for a Sunday ride it was about 10 or 15 miles, but they have worked their way up to being quite comfortable handling 100 miles in a day. They have taken similar Sunday trips to Hastings, Saranac, and Saugatuck.
As with most gangs, they have had scrapes with the law. Earlier this year they were stopped by an overzealous, and somewhat uninformed, state trooper because she noticed some of them were not wearing helmets and none of them had license plates.
“We got pulled over for impersonating motorcycle riders,” joked Dwight Bixler. She received her scooter education and let the group off. Moped, or scooter, riders are not required to wear helmets and they operate legally on ORV stickers not license plates.
We received our education about scooters from Jim Magee. Jim owns a small engine repair business in Shelbyville and sells the vehicles. He went on to tell us other facts that make owning and riding a scooter very attractive:
• The scooters cost between $1,000.00 to $1,500.00
• They get up to 100 miles per gallon.
• Scooters have lots of storage.
• You can ride legally on any road except the freeways.
• Drivers 19 and older need only a regular driver’s license.
• Those 15 to 19 need a permit and a helmet.
The gang loves their scooters. Their favorite roads are the better county and state ones because they have a nice shoulder for them to ride on. The law states they need to stay to the right in the lane, but when there is a shoulder they ride on them. Mary Scwab was quick to praise Michigan motorists. “Everyone is friendly and courteous to us,” she said. “Most everyone waves and we have never had any problems with other drivers.”
This has been a good summer for the Shelbyville Gang. The excellent weather has allowed this group of grandparents to make many similar Sunday excursions and they have put 1200 or more miles on their bikes.
They keep an eye out for each other. Jim watches his mirrors and keeps count of the group and Bob Schwab brings up the rear of the parade. Sometimes the group splits up when the ladies want to concentrate on garage sales and they all carry cell phones in case of an emergency.
Like any good reporter would, we kept asking questions until we got to the heart of the story and uncovered the real reason the group was riding all the way to Paw Paw. The art fair was part of the motivation, but the clincher for the deal came from Magee’s brother in law, Lionel Haskins, who operates a food concession. He promised the group they would eat for free “if they made it all the way there.”
The promise of free food as a reward for a ride on a perfect sunny day would make anyone ride a scooter for 100 miles or so, wouldn’t it?

Meanwhile... In April, I held an Airheads/Vintage Tech Day at my house.
http://darryl.crafty-fox.com/mcpics/2004/surfcitytechday/P4103276med.jpg

Then I went to Europe to go to one of the biggest vintage swapmeets in the world, Veterama:
http://darryl.crafty-fox.com/mcpics/2004/europe1/veterama/P4243336med.jpg

Sadly, my old R1100RS that I keep in Germany broke down, but I was able to get it fixed (http://darryl.crafty-fox.com/motorcycles/2004TheEnd.htm).

Even so, I was lucky enough that a friend in Germany let me ride his vintage Zuendapp in a couple vintage rallies. This is a 1938 Zuendapp K500, 4 speed handshift sidevalve hardtail, making about 18 hp.
http://darryl.crafty-fox.com/mcpics/2004/europe1/windmillrally/IMG_0031med.jpg

In May, I went to the Village Idiots' Lost Coast Luau in Eureka, CA. CA-1 was looking mighty fine...
http://darryl.crafty-fox.com/mcpics/2004/lcl/P5283876med.jpg

...and the weather really cooperated!
http://darryl.crafty-fox.com/mcpics/2004/lcl/P5293887med.jpg

In June, the Vintage BMW club had it's local Vasona Park Picnic.
http://darryl.crafty-fox.com/mcpics/2004/vasona/P6133985med.jpg

I also got to ride my repaired RS around in Italy, and specifically, in Tuscany. Oh, the food, the wine, and the roads are great!
http://darryl.crafty-fox.com/mcpics/2004/europe2/toscana/P6234133med.jpg

July was the MOA Rally in Spokane, of course. A friend from Germany came over and we made a 4,000 mile tour. We started by heading south... to meet some friends for lunch at the Far Western Tavern in Guadalupe, CA for a BBQ steak brunch.
http://darryl.crafty-fox.com/mcpics/2004/MOARally/P7114312med.jpg

Unfortunately, after riding through the Sierra on the way north, the R1150RS had a problem.
http://darryl.crafty-fox.com/mcpics/2004/MOARally/P7154331med.jpg

But Ozzie's BMW of Chico fixed it immediately. Even though the bike was out of warranty, and they've never seen me before, they got a partial refund from BMW NA for me. The rest of the trip was, fortunately, mechanically uneventful. The rally was fun...
http://darryl.crafty-fox.com/mcpics/2004/MOARally/P7174356med.jpg

...and then we rode to Seattle with some friends, through Mt. Rainier park.
http://darryl.crafty-fox.com/mcpics/2004/MOARally/P7194376crop.jpg

On the way home we rode through the Avenue of the Giants.

Battletrax came to Detroit again this year and I had to try it out.
If you don[t know, it is a short course laid out with three left turn circles and one right turn circle and timed by electronic devices. For $5 you can run it ten times and try to improve your skills. I went from 108 seconds to 58 seconds and quit after five runs. The youngsters on dirt bikes and pocket bikes did much better.
It was fun to watch the pocket bikes tear around the course.

OK, I guess that I'm ready to post a little retropective of this summer's riding fun. Not that it's COMPLETELY over mind you.....

03 was my first big season of riding and there were lots of firsts - first time motorcycle camping, first time riding out of state, etc. I really didn't expect much from 04, but I was pleasantly surprised. In fact, there were more firsts than last year, and they were much more exciting. Here are some of the highlights and my favorite pictures starting with a picture that I took on the way to Branson:

I went off-road riding for the first time in May. It was fun, I'd like to do more, and it made me a better street rider.

I rode outside of the country for the first time in July. It was my first trip ever to Canada. The gorgeous yellow flowers that were everywhere just took my breath away. I wanted to stay here and take more shots - Tracy and Brad did not share my enthusiasm.

It was also the first time I'd ridden a motorcycle out west. When I was deciding whether or not to go, BMWRich58 told me that I'd be a fool not to. But he also warned me that it would be so wonderful that all I'd want to do would be to go back. Here's me and the /6 during a ride through Glacier Nat'l Park. That was a great day.

Another highlight was my first competitive rally on my newly purchased first oilhead - a '96 R1100RS. Here's the bike at one of the bonus locations on the GM400 in very, very rural Vermont. I'll be definitely be doing more rallies in '05.

One of the things I'm most proud of is my first Bun Burner Gold. On August 17th I rode 1578 miles in 22 hours and 55 minutes. It was challenging and fun and I can't wait to do more. So yeah, it was a great season. Thanks for letting me share. :bikes

I had a fantastic summer of riding.

We start early with a jaunt to Daytona with the Sheepshagger. We saw some hogs in a pickup:

In June we hosted the Minuteman 1000 a 24 hr endurance rally. One of the bonus locations was a National Park Service plaque on the Appalachian Trail. Our riders had to get a photo of their flag at the marker. Seems like someone wanted to also get their wedding picture at the marker too:

Doug Mo went up there with me:

The Toy Box Trucking Team also introduced our new beer garden, staffed here by the Pineapple Brothers:

MOA Ambassador and all around great guy Brian Manke rode in from Wisconsin so I had to take him for an early ride on the Kancamangus highway:

So much fun had us jumping for joy:

In July the highlight of my summer was my trip west to Spokane. The Sheepshagger and I put the bikes in his new 3500 with the duramax diesel and headed west in air-conditioned comfort:

http://RPB.smugmug.com/photos/6644304-Th.jpg

We started out at the Top of the Rockies, a great rally.

http://RPB.smugmug.com/photos/11712477-M.jpg

From there we hooked up with Angelo and the Dawgmeister and headed to Spokane. No ride in the area would be complete without a stop at the infamous Lolo pass 77 miles of winding road sign.

From Lolo we went on to Spokane.

After Spokane Kbasa, the sheepshagger, pineapple and I took chacifer on the crazy uncle tour to the Adventure Rider campout in Ouray, CO. We had a great time. I found a very lonely post office:

http://RPB.smugmug.com/photos/11687253-M.jpg

Outside of Ketchum, ID I ran into a bunch of people I know from sailing. I raced with the guy on the left to Bermuda a number of years ago. The old cat on the right raced against my father and grandfather. It was rather surreal to run into them so far from salt water.

http://RPB.smugmug.com/photos/11687260-M.jpg

I got a great shot of Pineapple, the Shagger, Kbasa and Chacifer.

http://RPB.smugmug.com/photos/11714613-M.jpg

We also stopped in Moab. I was all amped up to see the arches and wanted to go for sunrise. I am very glad we did.

http://RPB.smugmug.com/photos/11687255-M.jpg

http://RPB.smugmug.com/photos/11714699-M.jpg

We had a great time in Ouray. I took a little field trip up into the mountains. I had never ridden here and it was very cool.

http://RPB.smugmug.com/photos/11687261-M.jpg

http://RPB.smugmug.com/photos/6646633-M.jpg

While we were in Ouray the Shagger mentioned to Chace that if she preferred to do the tour du corn in the dually we would be happy to tow a trailer if she decided to rent one. Here is a photo of Chace shortly after she realized that not only were we not going to let her drive, she was never going to get the front seat either.

Once back in New England we still had some great events left.

The first weekend of August is our Damn Yankees Rally. Doug MO introduced Scottish Trials. The DYR is a great time and kids are welcome. Here Doug gives a demonstration of how to handle one of the obstructions.

http://RPB.smugmug.com/photos/7168922-M.jpg

The real star of the show was Windjammer dude:

http://RPB.smugmug.com/photos/7168919-M.jpg

While Windjammer dude won the trials Corbett Nye captured the can toss:

http://RPB.smugmug.com/photos/7204601-M.jpg

These guys cheated:

http://RPB.smugmug.com/photos/7168751-M.jpg

Chace went up to Jamaica and scored a cool housecoat.

http://RPB.smugmug.com/photos/7204598-M.jpg

And Bubu the bear stayed behind and got smashed.

http://RPB.smugmug.com/photos/7204597-M.jpg

The DYR rally is in the middle of nowhere in western MA. We take care of fresh donuts by having special delivery.

note the club colors on the chopper
http://RPB.smugmug.com/photos/7124831-M.jpg

At the end of August we went up to Swanton Vermont for the U.S. National Trials championships. The real highlight of the trip was meeting farmer Daniel. Daniel opened up his farm for the event. We were the only folks camping on bikes and he invited us to stay up by the dairy barn. He warned us that the lights come on at 04:30 for milking and the cows like music. Here is Daniel doing what he does:

http://RPB.smugmug.com/photos/11687249-M.jpg

The next day Peter demonstrated the basics of counter steering:

http://RPB.smugmug.com/photos/11717193-M.jpg

Two weeks later Daniel purchased a new F650 GS. We are going to have a great time riding with him next summer so long as we can schedule it around the milkings.

It was a great summer with great times and great people.

Best,

Rob Nye

The software is configured to limit you to attaching one file per post. The people who are doing multiple pictures are using links and hosting the pictures on other servers. So you are not doing anything wrong.

If you want to link to a picutre on another server click the "mountain" icon and then paste in the URL for the image.

Nice picture, Pat!

If you want to put more than one picture in a post, you'll need a photo hosting service. If you have your pictures online, you can insert a link to the photo and include up to ten pictures in a post.

We're going to announce a partner program with Smugmug over the next few days that will save you some money and generate some funds to help us run the forum. We'll have an account we can use to include pictures in the BMW MOA's home page, which will save us on the hosting and bandwidth fees we spend to run the MOA's web pages. Additionally, smugmug is run by a guy that rides a K12RS.

How cool is that?

Well, my year started with a wee bit of trouble. You can see what it took to get my bike on a trailer. I would have tried to ride it, but everyone claimed it was unridable. I don't know, a little duc tape, some prying here and there.

Yes, she knows I enjoy working on bikes out in the garage. Since I did such a nice job with mine, she went and wrecked hers so I could have the joy of replaci.. err fixing hers. See what I did with her Ivory Cruiser (don't mind that it is on Bob Weis's trailer in Florida, 1,300 miles from home, Bob had a magic wand I used to turn the chromed spoked wheels into what you see in the picture). Another nice job, don't you know?! ;)

Wow.... the pics ya'll have posted are splendiferous, fantabulous, phenominous.... envious.

Work was really on my mind this summer, so I didn't get to take any long trips, and *definitely* missed going to Spokane.

But, some riding did ensue, I just wish these pics measured up.

My wife and I are building a place up in North Carolina, so many of my rides involved going up and meeting with builders, etc. This is the view from our lot:

http://www.visian.nu/images/nc_view.jpg

It's just off NC209 near Waynesville. For those of you familiar with the area, 209 is like having your own Dragon.

http://www.visian.nu/images/r80gs.jpg

This is a favorite BBQ stop along the way... in Clayton, GA.

http://www.visian.nu/images/oinkers.jpg

No comments from the peanut gallery, please! ;)

I did manage to work in some riding with the working... taking a trip to visit the Mayo Clinic (http://www.bmwmoa.org/forum/showthread.php?t=3102) to meet with them on an assignment we were working on.

http://www.visian.nu/images/fireworks.jpg

Along the way I stopped in for dinner with Diaper Dude:

http://www.visian.nu/images/aliciandad1.jpg

And stayed at the Ambassadorial Hotel:

http://www.visian.nu/images/beemerhill.jpg

While you lucky dogs were in Spokane, I had to settle for AMA Vintage Days. When you're planning your trip to Beemerville next year, be sure to put the Motorcycle Hall of Fame Museum on your itinerary. (http://www.ama-cycle.org/museum/)

http://www.visian.nu/images/ama_museum1.jpg

http://www.visian.nu/images/ama_museum.jpg

This summer was the political season, so some time was spent discussing things on-line instead of riding. :type

http://www.visian.nu/images/ian_the_peacenick.jpg

I did ride the K12 to a political rally late in the summer...

http://www.visian.nu/images/democrats.jpg

Sorta like this guy, I was the only bike in the parking lot. Sure did make it easy to dispatch with the traffic jam as everyone was leaving. :burnout

This was all part of a trip to Biketoberfest. Me and the guys I work (http://www.dnacommunications.com) with have a Bike Week tradition:

http://www.visian.nu/images/pokechop.jpg

We're biker dudes... we eat pork with our hands!

I did manage to get in at least one camping ride this year, the Georgia Club's annual Labor Day Adventure.

http://www.visian.nu/images/brmcc.jpg

This is at the Blue Ridge Motorcycle Campground in Cruso, the week before this river washed out their bridge.

http://www.visian.nu/images/willville.jpg

This is at the Willville campground, in The Meadows of Dan, Virginia.

And... last, but not least... I rode the R69S to the Vintage BMW Owners regional rally in Georgia....

http://www.visian.nu/images/vbmwo_show.jpg

and won Best in Show.

All-in-all it was a pretty good summer. Having to work a lot sucked, but I made the best of it.

Nice pics!!! My mom lived in Clayton, Ga for years--she owned and ran the Beechwood Inn b&B up on the hill if you were to leave town going out 76 to the east. You know Deliverence was filmed in that area (mostly in Tallulah Gorge)--the closing of the movie was filmed in Clayton.

Geez.... we are *still* trying to live that movie down in these parts (and I *ain't* from around here... I'm from NYC). Sqeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeal like a piggie!

The roads up in the hills surrounding the Chatooga River, which empties into the gorge and the Tugaloo river, feature some *excellent* dual sport riding.

And... more than a few cars parked on cinder blocks.... ;)

In early July I got a wild hair and decided one Friday that I would ride to Mom's house (600 miles away in Alabama) for the weekend. I Bought a new mesh suit that day and hit the road. I arrived in Vicksburg MS late that night and stayed over. I was really lucky- Friday PM some nasty weather was in front of me, but it blew over as I slept and was behind me as I set out the next morning.
Along the way I took a brief diversion onto the Natchez Trace Parkway:

OK I'm going to cheat a little bit here. October may technically be autumn, but down in this part of the country it's still summer. I frequent a forum at www.boxerworks.com and those of us on that forum have decided to have TWO rallies of our own every year, in May and October, hosted at the property of a super-nice guy named Ken who lives five miles off the Talimena Scenic Drive in Oklahoma (Our host and location really ROCK!!!).
Unfortunately I was not able to bring The BatBike to the October rally because it was having some real bastard-from-hell charging system problems at the time. I didn't let that stand in the way of hanging with good friends and went in the Vegmobile instead. Probably saved my life as the drive up there was through some VERY nasty storms (which of course were replaced by sunshine the next day).
But Ken was gracious enough to loan me his extra bike for the weekend. Here I am on his 1978 R100S:

ANDY: Think you'll ever get out of here?
RED: Sure. When I got a long white beard and about three marbles left rolling around upstairs.
ANDY: Tell you where I'd go. Zihuatanejo.
RED: Zihuatanejo?
ANDY: Mexico. Little place right on the Pacific. You know what the Mexicans say about the Pacific? They say it has no memory. That's where I'd like to finish out my life, Red. A warm place with no memory. Open a little hotel right on the beach. Buy some worthless old boat and fix it up like new. Take my guests out charter fishing.

(Ixtapa/Zihuatanejo are joined at the hip down there) Ixtapa principly a new tourist construct was built by Zihuatanejo, a very lovely, slow moving old fishing village. Enough of the geography lesson.

Sorry, got a ride report here (http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=81108)

K1200s @ Texas world speedway this past may.
The new S is a rocket, but i was pretty
tenative in the corners. The bike did well
and would do better if I hit the marks.
However, it does feel long and changing
lines in mid corner wasn't easy.
Compunding that was the fact I was usually
in the wrong gear on exit so drive out of
the corners was compromised. Still,
by the end of the day it was only the
instructors passing me.

Have to go back now!

The trip to Grayling was followed about a month later by a trip to Port Huron to visit a new friend from the forum, Jim VonBaden, who was working there on a temporary assignment. It was an extremely windy day, with high wind warnings from the weather bureau, and I probably should have paid closer attention. The ride home was exhausting, but it was fun to visit Port Huron. The picture is the Blue Water Bridge, connecting Michigan and Canada:

OK technically not on a BMW, but still a fun ride. Taiwan has had a restriction on motorcycles over 150cc in place forever. You simply could not register a motorcycle over 150ccs for street use. There have always been hoards of scooters and small displacement bikes but nothing larger than 150ccs. In late 2004 this law changed and Bikes of all sizes are now allowed. Large bike business is booming there and most mfgs. have dealerships there that seem like they "sprang up" overnight.

I had a chance to ride with some friends on a borrowed Yamaha XJR1200. This was a little scary, borrowed bike, Asian traffic, riding with 15 other people with less than 1 years experience on a large machine, etc. We headed south out of Tainan, they took me on some of the most incredible mountain roads I have ever been on. Our regular, logical, "rules of the road" do not really apply and this was easily the most dangerous ride I have ever been on. I'm sure I was one of the very first westerners to ride a motorcycle in these mountains. At each placed we stopped locals seemed amazed when I took off my helmet. Large bikes are rare enough there, large bike ridden by a large goofy white guy was almost like a UFO sighting.

7-11 Stop for refreshments. I'm the big one in the orange shirt. "My" Yamaha XJR1200 on the left.
