Seen at Airheads at the Aerodrome! This bike was dug out from behind a static display in an old hangar. ;)

Could it be the long lost prototype of the first K-Bike? Definitely not an airhead.

Paul; You are wrong, it's one of those very rare vertical 4's that BMW experimented with back in the 20's and thirties, It's obviously air cooled, and quite good looking, but seeing as how it's final drive turned out to be bullet proof, and it's electrics never failed, they decided it wouldn't sell. Actually it's an excelsior 4, the grandfather of the (im)famous Indian 4. Vaya con Dios, Dutch

Did someone say Indian 4?

The aerodrome has four hangars loaded with old planes, cars and even a few vintage motorcycles. This bike was in one of the hangars.

When you look at the headers and where your feet rest the need for high leather boots is explained. Must have been very toasty in any season. Not much of a muffler either.

Here's an even older bike found at the Rhinebeck Aerodrome.

Any idea what it is?

I'm going way out on a limb and saying that roundel isn't the only thing that's not original. I'm digging on that custom air filter! :p

Paul,

That looks like a very early Merkel, not to be confused with the later V twin Flying Merkel. I've been waiting a long time for a thread like this.

Thanks for identifying the Merkel.

There is a lot of old machines at the Rhinebeck Aerodrome other than aircraft. Now take the ride below.

Question: Why is this old ride so far ahead of its time? :scratch

Well you are in the right church but in the wrong pew. You might call it a green machine.

As I recall it was not a Stanley Steamer but it was a steam powered car. Not sure of the manufacturer.

It sure doesnt seem like a very big car for a steamer...it must not have had very long distance capabilities?

Paul,
This is a 1900-1905 Model "Grout Steam Runabout"
Features include: 2-seater, 6 1/2 gal fuel tank, 26 gal water tank, it came equipped with rubber mats, 2 side lamps, 5" gong, complete set of tools, hose connection for filling boiler direct, Syphon water raiser, extra chain links, Gauge glasses, and 2 oilers. With a curb weight of 900lbs and a cost of $800.00 it was considered a good deal at the time.

More please.

I only went up to the Aerodrome museum as a time filler before the airshow. I should have stayed longer and taken more pictures.

But will post an airframe trivia.

This plane actually flew - albeit a few hops down the field.

No rudder - how did it turn?

Something unique about the engine and prop common to many early aircraft engines. What is "unique"?

Paul,
You give too many clues. This is a 1909 Bleriot XI. It actually does have a functioning rudder but I think you're referring to the fact that you "warp" the wing to bank it.

What is unique about that old engine is that it's a "rotary" (NO not a wankel!). The engine block and cylinders rotate around the (normal) reciprocating parts (Pistons, crank and conrods are in a fixed pisition). This created better cooling, with the cylinders rotating in a circle:

Confusing comment about how the first airplane turns with no rudder, I think you meant ailerons. The rudder doesn't make an aircraft turn. WELL, normally it doesn't and if it does it's not a really slick way of doing it. Have heard of bomber pilots making "flat" turns with the rudder because of some anomaly, oh like loose bombs in the bomb bay for example:jawdrop.

The rudder's normal job is to control yaw.

My bad! How does plane turn without using ailerons? The mechanism for so doing was built into the plane. I have read that modern computer controlled experimental aircraft are using this old technique once again. Birds use it all the time. ;)

Gilly nailed it by proclaiming the "Rotary". This particular one is a 1914 Caudron G111.
