Two days ago I'm riding my RT when it suddenly starts making this godawful knocking sound from the right side of the engine. Fortunately I was only a couple of blocks from the house, so I rode it home and had it towed to the dealer. They opened it up today, and found that the lower plug had broken off inside the cylinder and damaged the piston and valves. They said that they had seen a rash of these problems recently with the porcelain breaking off of Bosch plugs. To make matters worse, they said that they could only put Bosch back in once the repairs are done - at least 10 to 14 days. :cry
Questions:
1. Is there anything I should ask the dealer to look for as far as additional damage? If the piston was damaged, I'm wondering about the cylinder walls.
2. Does anyone know of a substitute for the stock Bosch plugs in an 04 1150RT?

Sorry to hear about your RT. How many miles on your bike?
I just purchased a prior owned 04 GS with 7000 miles. I don’t need this issue, just my luck it would happen to me.
I was wondering what the dealer’s explanation is why they could only use Bosch plugs. I hear that NGK make great plugs.
I'm sure the dealer won't take a chance putting your RT back together unless all parts are in running condition. I don't think they would want a repeat issue related to not fixing it properly.
Check out the following link for NGK

You might have to let the dealer put you bike back together then change out the plugs yourself.
Good luck

Only 1500, still brand new.

They weren't very specific, but made it sound like that was the only thing they were authorized to put in.
Thanks for the link, and yeah, I'm thinking I need to find a different brand and put them in myself. So much for the benefits of a dual spark engine - I think I'd prefer surging.
