I am finally taking my 1959 R/60 to a place called Re-Psycle BMW to have them thouroughly go over it and get it running well again. It sat in my Mother-in-laws garage for a number of years with gas in it. She finally got fed up with her husband not wanting to move on getting it going (he is not a motorcycle guy) so she signed it over to me. Several years ago I was able to take it out for rides; however, over time, it got harder and harder to start and ran like crap! It also had a tendancy for severe "tank slappers". Well it is now time for it's resurection!!! :clap So I am not looking for a complete restoration I just want it gone over and anything mechanical fixed so it can once again eat up some miles. I am also going to, later on, get it and the Steib sidecar repainted. Do you think I can do this for $3000 or should I be expecting a much larger bill?

What are you planning on having them do? Is it carte blanche for them or do you/they have specific plans? How many miles on the bike?
I spent about $2K doing a complete mechanical resto my running R69S and I did all the top end teardown myself. I just had a mechanic do the bottom end (bearings, slinger cleaning, etc.) as well as refitting of the top end with valves, seats, and guides. I didn't do any clutch work or have the tranny overhauled.
If your $3K includes the painting of the sidecar, I think you'ld better expect to pay more. Even $3K for someone else to do ALL the work seems a bit low. $3K at around $75/hour shop rate is only 40 hours. Labor is very costly...and then there's parts!

No the $3000 does not include the painting. Have an inside path to a guy who has been doing body work and painting for 40 years (wifes uncle) if I have to pay $5000 or even a little more so be it the bike is a family heirloom so it will be repaired no matter the cost I was just wondering what you guys might have to say.
