My bike was stolen today while it was parked outside my work in Elizabeth, NJ. It was a Phoenix Grey 02 R1100SA. The incident was caught on videotape but the only useful lead would be the car that dropped off the thief was a late model gold Jag convertable. There were 3 cars involved...2 to lookout and 1 to drop off the guy who drilled out my keyswitch and rode the bike away w/o a helmet. I guess the guys involved were watching me because the bike was outside by itself for about 10 minutes before they came along. One thing is for sure...the town of Elizabeth NJ is an armpit and I am very sad that I have to work there. I wish tons of misfortune upon those who stole my bike. I am keeping it clean here on the postboard and not letting my anger out, but that's ok, because all you bike owners out there know how I feel right now.

That just really sucks. Sometimes this is a really screwed up world. I hope the thieves are caught and they throw away the key.

I hope you had good insurance. Those sound like pro's and not much you could of done. May they rot in hell.

Chris, sorry about your bike. I would hate to have to work in an area like that. Reading that makes me glad that I live in a place where you can leave the keys in the ignition when you go in to the store, and not think twice about it.

Thanks everyone, I'm just mad at myself for not doing more to protect it. I have a disc lock I could have brought with me, but I had not planned on being off the bike more than 20-30 mins. Watching the timeline on the video, the bike was taken 14 mins after I got off it, It literally took the guy 30 seconds to zip drill out the ignition and start the bike...he even rode it off without a helmet. I agree the guys were pros and had either cased my bike or followed me in. They might have been called in by people that work at adjacent businesses, too. Who knows. There will be another bike after all this gets worked out with the insurance company eventually...I'm keeping my chin up!

man, raw deal, im pulling for you.

not to hijack the thread, but wtf good are those cameras if they dont get you a good shot of the person or the license plate? a dude just steals the bike, in broad daylight, right in front of your place of business? people sure can be disappointing.

-------------------------------
you: hey, my bike is gone!

receptionist: [snapping gum] it was just stolen.

you: what?!

receptionist: [twirling hair with pencil] oh yeah, it's all on video.

you: well let me see it!!

receptionist: hold on, i gotta cawl the security guard. [stands up and leans out to project her voice down the hall] STAAAAAN! C'MERE!

[stan, the security guard approaches. he is wiping powdered sugar off his gigantic belly.]

stan: what's up?

you: she says someone just stole my motorcycle, and you have it on tape!

stan: i sure do. those guys have bawls! and theyre fast!

you: LET ME SEE IT!!!!

stan: relax dude. follow me.

[you go stan's little office. he sits you in front of a 12" black and white tv. he manipulates a remote. a jaguar pulls up. a guy, not even wearing a ski mask jumps out, drills your key thingy, starts the bike and drives on it in less than one minute.]

you: HOLY @#)%! WHAT THE #@)(*$ ARE YOU DOING?!

stan: i guess we could cawl the cops.

you: [passes out in anger.]

------------------------

security guards, cameras, whatever. people dont respect private property, and they steal it. totally sucks.

i hope you get the bike back in one piece, and i hope they catch the punks who rode off on it. hopefully you didnt have anything sentimental in the bags (if you had bags on it.)

how many of those jaguars are in the area?

In my mind, the best thing you could do now is to *not blame yourself*.

There are pricks everywhere. These were pros. If you had your other lock on the bike, they would have been back tomorrow or the next day with whatever it took to steal it.

They probably had an order.

Damn!

Chris,

Sorry to hear about your bike.

As kbasa said, I was lucky to get mine back.

If I can suggest it, send e-mail to all the local dealers. If
there are local boards, post the VIN and license numbers.
In short, get the word out to as many people as possible.

I know the police in my area wouldn't spend too much time
investigating (but they sent what seemed like the SWAT team
for a car that had been keyed) and felt I had to do as much as
I could towards getting the word out.

Best of luck to you.

Ian

Well, I got a phone call today from the Elizabeth PD saying my bike was found in Newark (NJ). Argh. The call I didn't want to get. Who knows, maybe my bike was liberated in a fiery gun battled bust and it's in fine shape...found before it was shipped to Chile....then again, maybe it was beat-ridden and left for broke on the side of the road when it was found??? We'll find out tomorrow when I go get the release papers and stop at the towing yard where it is. I think at this point I will have the guys at Cross Country BMW in Metuchen come pick it up and bring it to the shop for an evaluation, depending on what I find when I go get it.....another night tossing and turning thinking about my bike!

Got the bike out of impound today...1 hour at the police station, $170 to the impound and $20 tip to the BMWMOA towing guy who brought my baby to the dealer for me. Also found out there was an arrest made when the bike was recovered....Mr Jaris Scott, 33 (of Newark I would suppose) was found to be in possession of my bike 5 hours after it was stolen. Here's some pics of the bike...(Mr Scott's helmet was left with the bike)

Some of the damage: broken ignition, seat lock and gas cap. Missing fork tube cap, broken rear blinker and scuffed head on right side from the bike being laid down, etc....

Looks like you got of lucky, other than the whole being completely violated by having your bike stolen thing. It could have been a lot worse than it is. Heck, you even got a free spare helmet out of the deal!:D

you know, this is nice to see. i have this terrible impression of the police regarding stolen property, one where they just take the report, mutter 'uh huh' when you tell them what was taken, then stick it in a filing cabinet somewhere and nothing happens. clearly that isnt the case for you two guys, and that is super.

that is a gorgeous bike, even with the damage it sustained. im happy for you that youve got it back!

Congratulations on getting your bike back in fairly decent condition. It is my deepest wish for you that Mr. Jaris Scott has found himself sitting in a jail cell with a VERY VERY lonely man with a VERY VERY perverted view of sex.
