My 04 1150R went down a few weeks ago and busted open the Valve Cover so I changed that while off no direct impact to the Valve Rockers. But when I started it up within a minute or two that side exhaust pipe started glowing WHY?
My best guess is in the fall the catalytic converter was damaged internally restricting the exhaust flow from that pipe. It probably broke in the forward section of the converter on one side restricting the gas flow and causing the pipe to glow because of the heat build up as a result of the restriction.
I have a 02 R1150R. I had the aft section of my cat blocked due to damage on the aft end of the cat and the entire cat glowed a brilliant molten red after a few minutes of running. In a campfire gab session at a rally a one of the guys talked about a case very similar to yours. When he changed out his cat he cracked it open and found the internals had broken and were restricting the gas flow on one side.

Two things I know of that will cause the pipe to glow:
Exhaust valve badly adjusted allowing unburned fuel to enter pipe.
Bad stick coil on 4 spark bikes.

You may also want to verify that the throttle cable on that side is correctly seated in the TB housing/guide. I've see overheated pipes because the throttle cable was hung up and not properly seated.

Jim,
If you decide to replace your cat, I have a good working one from my 1150 gs that should fit.
It's a low mileage (~20k) one I took off my bike when I installed a staintune system that sold with the bike. Also have a perfect 1150 GS muffler if anyone is needing one pm me.
