BMW BIKERS TO RALLY IN ALLEN COUNTY

LIMA — The Allen County Fairgrounds is no stranger to the throaty roar of motorcycle pipes.
But next year, a different kind of bike will be rolling in, something far quieter but with every bit as much muscle.
In July, the BMW Motorcycle Owners of America will hold its annual rally in Lima, bringing around 7,000 people and 4,000 motorcycles to town. Despite the name, the group is an international organization with members in 40 countries, many of which send at least a few to the rally, organizers said.
“We’re going to transform the Allen County Fairgrounds to Beamerville, USA,” said Sue Rihn-Manke, of Wisconsin, chairwoman of the rally. “You’re going to have license plates from Canada to Mexico.”
The majority of the attendees will ride their bikes in from across the continent, said Ray Zimmerman, of St. Louis, executive director of the group.
“BMW owners are a unique group of people that ride a unique bike,” he said. “Primarily, we socialize. We’ll have probably 4,000 people camped out here in tents.”
The rally won’t be open to the public, Zimmerman said. Vendors will set up shop for the du-ration, and seminars on cold-weather riding, traveling around Europe and other topics will be conducted.
Otherwise, the bikers will simply “hang out,” he said.
“Basically, we’re a big family of BMW riders that like to get together once a year,” he said. “We’ll spend about a half a million dollars a day while we’re here.”
The rally will be held July 21-24, though some will be in as early as July 18 to start setup. Overall estimates put the direct economic impact between $4 million and $5 million, said Christine Pleva, director of the Lima-Allen County Convention and Visitors Bureau.
That figure should be multiplied by 2.9 to figure out the overall impact, she said.
Lima was chosen after club members met with Allen County Fair Manager Jay Begg at a convention in Las Vegas a few years ago, Zimmerman said. While a lot of contacts were made, Lima stood out because of its central location and Begg’s cooperation, he said.
“We think this is going to be one of the best rallies we’ve ever had,” he said.

I'll do the rally for under $200. Camping, food, beverages, gas. Won't have much of an "economic impact" on Lima.

In the Lima News Sue said it's not open to public.Does this mean that only members are welcome?Live in Lima and not a member but intended to ride out to fairgrounds to "lurk"(Web expression)

The county fair is over and paper said best day over 44,000. people were there. Sounds like a lot but that is what paper said.It should handle your rally with no problem.

The Rally is open to BMW riders and their guests. We would love to have you join us!

I agree about the fairgrounds.. It is a wonderful venue for us.

HEY! You should join the BMW MOA this year. You aren't going to want to miss all of the articles we will be putting into the magazine and up on the web page about your town.

For that much, you should be "posting" and getting the maximum bang for your buck. :D

Interesting dates..AMA 'Vintage Racing Days on July 15-17 and than MOA Rally on July 21-24. Ohio is really go'n to benefit from all this activity!

Will there be any consideration towards day passes at the MOA..or is that another tabu policy question??

Sorry --- Day passes just don't work at a national.

.

The registration form will ask for your MOA number, so you could enter that information if you have it. BUT - generally, once you walk up to registration to pay your money, they do not ask for any ID or proof of membership. The rally is open to BMW MOA members and their friends, so there will be many people at the rally who are not members...

It is not really all that much. But you can see quite a few bikes there on any given weekend. This is about 20 miles from my house. See, we need distractions since it is so flat up here.

I'll have to look it up and post it, but a ride around Cleveland through the Metro Parks would be nice, also sedate. A string of parks called the emerald neclace.

I had been to Geneva a few years back, sort of a time capsule. The Mud Hens are indeed alive, and playing in a "new"downtown stadium. Its said to be one of the finest minor league parks in the country. Its two years old. Also within walking distance is a pretty good micro brewery"Maumee Bay Brewing Co". in the historic "Oliver House".
