OK, so I'm cheap, what can I say? The local BMW dealership told me I needed a new clutch master cylinder after checking the problem I was having with no pressure on the clutch handle. Not wanting to fork over the $450 for the part and another $150 for the labor, I figured I'd give it a shot myself. I have done other, more complex jobs on other bikes in the past so I didn't think it would be too big of a job.

Long story short, I bled out the fluid, took off the old master cylinder, put on the new master cylinder, and zipped everything back up. Now I have great pressure and the clutch lever is pulling like a champ again...but...

Now the bike runs like crap, I mean terrible. I can hardly get it to start and when it does start, it idles VERY rough. I have to rev it pretty high to get any kind of consistency out of it and it surges horribly when ridden and it kind of gives off a faint burning smell (I rode the bike around the block and promptly returned home and shut it off). The only thing I can think of that I might have messed up is when I slid the fuel tank back a few inches to access the wiring harness to replace the cable that leads from the master cylinder.

I was thinking that maybe I had pinched something or had kinked a fuel line. I got the bike back into the garage and visually inspected the lines and everything looks ok but the bike is still running very badly.

What did I do here?

Any helpful suggestions (if you just want to call me a schmuck, that's ok too) will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
K

sounds exactly like throttle cable not sitting in the adjusters by the throttle body as fabiox says...

I had a similar result after some work I did and it was the cable going into the throttle body on one side. The cable end was sitting just slightly proud of the fitting it drops into. Just as the Fabiox and Henzilla suggested.

Thanks for the responses. So assuming it is a throttle body adjustment, how do I go about fixing it? I'm a little slow...:huh

DO NOT ADJUST THE THROTTLE BODIES>> EXPERIENCE TALKS HERE_ IT will need resync of the bodies if you do. it is where the cable rides onto the cam on the throttle body most likely....

OK,
If you look take the covers off, look at where the cables roll onto the throttle body. They are beside the jugs and when you twist the throttle back you should see these move.

If the cable is not sitting on properly, like being inside the cam follower, you will need to guide it back on.
NOw how do I know? (( I have an aftermarket cruise control on mine and the little cable with some beebee type end will fall off the throttle body cam. this will open one side and the bike makes a big noise, misses (cough sputter surge )and runs ruff.
If you twist it all the way back- the bike just hauls azz. but ya cant run it like that.)) :^)

As soon as it gets back on the cam... WHAM it runs sooooo much smoother now...

I found that solution here- ok remove it. I didnt want to, I just bent the tabs that hold it onto the cam so it wont slip- off. Did it work? NO yesterday at the beach it did it. a coat hanger wire and reach inside - lightly pull the chain while twisting the throttle- it slipped back on the cam.. final solution.. get rid of the aftermarket cruise....
but I like it...

good luck

I feel so good to give a little bit back to someone at this forum .

Ciao for now :wave

See you guys at the TN Rally (it will be my first one)

Doggies! I just posted a new thread about a problem I'm having with my RT that sounds very similar to this. And it started acting up after I removed the tank to change the fuel filter! Haven't gotten any replies to my thread yet, so I'm gonna check the throttle body cables. Guess it pays to read as many threads as you can!
