Thats really cool, even though CCM is like the sworn enemy of IU. Here's a picture of me goofing around before my audition. Anyone can feel free to submit it for the caption contest.

Garth - born two generations too late for the Rat Pack.

Go get 'em, Garth. Sing it like you sang it in rehearsal.

How did the audition go??? Were they scared of your sword? Are you trying out for one show or to be a permanant part of the opera company or what?

Garth, I have seen that look in your eyes before every performance. Glad it is all over with and you did a good job.
Remember the advice from your mom. "Don't ever let anyone up-stage you!" Somehow, I think you have far exceeded that advice. Kudos to the sword.
Love,
Mom

Hey y'all. My audition went really well. What is was for is the opera season at IU. We have what they call a cattle call in which everyone and their brother comes in to sing for roles for the entire season here at school. My teacher said (via a voicemail to my girlfriend) that he was really proud of my audition and that I had done a great job. I also got some feedback from some buddies who were in the audience who said that I rocked out with my bad self. I was pretty happy with it as well. So hopefully I'll know in the next week or so if I got cast as anything in th operas.

Thanks mom. Just so you know though I didn't bring the sword to the audition. I think that may have been just a tad bit over the top to do that. :D But hell, when has that ever stopped me before?

Garth, best of luck. My father was a graduate of IU dept. of music, a conductor, vocal coach, and lifelong educator. I often site (blame) him when asked "how did you get into this....?" I started by falling asleep at operas when I was 2 years old. I've been into music, performance, show biz pretty much all my life and love it.

I know that I was looking for it earlier to post this year's pic. It was pretty funny reading some of the responses that were totally relevant a year ago, but aren't now. It was like a fun trip down memory lane.

Garth, It sounds like the audition went well. When you find out about roles and schedules you should let us know because I`m sure you will have your own cheering section (that could be good or bad). Good Luck, Kerry. Exit stage right! :bolt

Yeah I did okay last night. I didn't hit a homer, but I hit a triple. I should know hopefully sometime next week what I got. We'll see what happens.

You should post links to the IU schedule... I could really make some points with the spousal accessory unit if I took her to an Opera. If I came up with a whole season of Opera.... :dance Maybe a new GS!!!

I will have to follow your advice. I'm friends with one of the bartenders at Nick's. Lets just say that my tab doesn't always reflect in any way what exactly I've been drinking.

Here is a link. Try to look over the bad photoshop job on the page. If you look hard enough, the neon sign in the background is Nick's.

Thanks man, I'm going to need it. The total amount of music that I'm responsible for learning by then is 20 some pages, and it is some really really hard stuff. I'm mobilizing every resource that I have in hopes of going in and kicking ass. It's my role, they just don't know it yet.

Well as a matter of fact it will. It's totally worth it though for this opera. It's being directed by Sir Colin Graham who was one of Britten's go to guys back in the day. I got to work with him one other time when I was just in the chorus for another opera and was absolutely floored by his talent. He's also a really cool guy. I walked into rehearsal one day and had all of my riding gear in my hands and he started up a conversation about bikes. He shared with me that he didn't even own a car until he was in his 40's. The last bike that he had was an R1100RS, but he had to give it up because of his health. However, musical rehearsals don't actually start until October 10th, so I'm still hoping to make it out to Falling Leaf. Oh, the opera is Benjamin Britten's A Midsummer Night's Dream. I just realized that I was speaking in opera code. Sorry about that.

I just got back from doing my callback. I totally spanked it. I kicked sand in its face, kicked it while it was down, and then went home and banged its wife. As you can tell I'm really really excited. I think that I also made a really good impression on the Maestro because he asked if I had been working on the music before, which I had not. It's a good day. ;) :rocker :clap :rocker :brad :heart

Thanks Irene. Trust me, for this role I'm not going to be getting all girthy. I'm going to be running around stage damn near half-naked for part of this show. Guess who's going to be hitting the weight room like a maniac for the next 3 months? It's me, it's me.

Yeah, it's just going to play in Bloomington. However, the MAC (Musical Arts Center) is the second largest stage in the United States, second only to the New York Metropolitan opera.

I'm not sure if it's going to be recorded or not. There are some problems with copyright issues and such when schools try to record or tape operas. I'm pretty sure that the copyrights for the opera are still in effect because it was written in 1960. If there is a recording I will do my best to try to get ahold of it, even though it may not be an "official recording".

It is nice to have some recordings of your work even if just for personal reasons.
I once had a piano teacher who gave a performance in Amsterdam and her husband had made an 'unofficial' recording. It was wonderfull to listen to as it was her debut as a performer. Even though it was not professionaly recorded it is a treasure for her family and friends. It was Beethoven's 4th pianoconcert and when I listen to it now I still think of my teacher who played it so well too.

I know exactly what you are talking about. Recordings are a way for us to look back at a window in time and remember. I'm listening to a recording of Britten conducting midsummer that has Peter Pears, his long-time artistic collaborater and life-partner, and it just gives me chills to listen to the interpretion that both men, whom I admire greatly, had for the piece.

It is incredible to listen to various artists performing the same piece. I must have at least 3-4 different performers for a lot of the pianoworks from Mozart to Beethoven. I like the recordings from the 60's/70's better as there is a certain warmth to the performances that isn't there with the 'over digitized' recordings of today.
Just listen to Karajan from the 60's vs the 90's recording he did of the Beethoven symphonies.
I can appreciate the artistry and sweat equity that goes into any performance.
Good luck with yours !!! :nod

I totally agree with you. There is a certain organic qualities that the older recordings have that the new ones don't. Thanks for the wish of good luck. I'm going to be working my butt off to learn this role if and when I officially get it.
