Reason enough to always carry a small pair of vice grips and a bit of wire. This got me home more than once.

This has happened to you more than once? Someone's not attending to lubing the barrel on the shift cable.
This happened to me once, early on with my /7. I was outside Thunder Bay, Ontario, and the cable snapped. Decided to stay in the Provinicial Park that night. No vise-grips (but I carry them now!!) so I tried the Anonymous book...came up empty. I ended up riding ~150 miles without using the clutch to the nearest BMW dealer west of there. Fortunately there weren't many towns along the way so I just stayed in high gear most of the time. Replaced the cable...it's still on the bike...and my barrels are lubed more frequently now!

Famous? I had no idea. Where have you seen it? I think my buddy may have posted it somewhere along the way. Yes, that is my bike. A 1972 R75/5. Attached is a full shot of Bob.

Actually, it happened just twice. I realized the clutch cable had become lodged between the frame and the engine block. When I installed the second new cable, I let it float freely outside and it's been much easier to shift :thumb, and I've had no need for the vice grips, but still have them in my tool kit!
