OK, I been reading all these mega threads about oilheads and trans input shaft failures plus a multitude of other problems both actual and me thinks otherwise and I got paranoid and started looking for another machine not by BMW. I decided that maybe a Honda ST1300 or maybe a Yamaha FJR would be possible replacements for my trouble free '04RT. Well, it is interesting that used RTs are really used as in mega miles as compared to most used Honda's and Yamaha's. Ebay only had listed something like 7 RT's and most were RTP's and most were high mileage.
I have therefore concluded that Beemers are ridden more miles and many owners are maybe a might strange and are possibly more inclined to demand perfection than are owners of lesser machines. I also think Beemer owners tend to be a bit more inquisitive and more likely to become intimate with the workings of their machines than are owners of other brands.
Conclusion: I'll stick with the pride of the Bavarian Motor Works thank you very much.
Now if only this miserable butt ugly weather would just improve:banghead

Before you draw conclusions about who rides what how far, maybe you should look beyond one source.
Talk to people who ride other bikes. Pay attention to what you see on the road, in motel parking lots and in National parks and other tourist attractions. Look at odometers when you can.
The guy who used to own my "local" (the only one in the state) BMW dealership is more often than not seen riding a high-mileage bug-splattered Italian bike.
Most of the staff at the same dealership, which also sells KTMs & Kawasakis, park their personal rides at work, and the majority of them don't have a blue and white rondel.
The "local" airhead guru (also hundreds of miles away) often rides another maker's famous horizontally opposed engine.
A recently retired officer of my local BMW riders club has taken most of his long trips on Japanese bikes, including Iron Butt rallies and long distance rough-rides in Alaska and Central America.
Personally, my wife and I have cleaned up the garage and the only Beemer still in it is her F800ST.
Two airheads, an oilhead, and a hexhead have all "been weighed, measured, and found wanting".
Perhaps people are "more demanding of perfection" because they paid more for the product. I wouldn't demand perfection, because I know man is incapable of it; but I would expect better than the "lesser machines", given the hype and the expense. Being "inquisitive" leads me to explore the "inner workings" of my machines, and I can't say they're a superior product; just more exclusive... That difference alone doesn't justify the reputation or the premium to me.
If it still does to you, that's fine. I'm sure most here will agree with you, not me.

Hi Bob, The term "lesser machines" I shouldn't have used as I can't prove or disprove the statement. I do believe there are more beemer bikes be they airhead, oilhead, or whatever with high miles than most other brands. That is not to say one cannot find high mileage Hondas, Yamahas, HDs and on and on.
Most motorcycles I see around here are of the HD persuasion or are some other clone thereof. This weekend is zee beeg Baker City Hells Canyon Ralley and it will be attended by many thousands of big vee twin riders and not much else. They all will stand around in their leathers looking at each other while some fool smokes off his tires in the middle of Main Street. Ahhhh yesss, Ameicana at its finest:banghead
