I was wondering: has anyone ever had their old defective rotor re-wound? I have an '79 R80/7 and i was thinking of trying to recycle my old rotor. Is it difficult with these rotors? Maybe i can find some old timer here in Portland who has experience rewinding alternators!

Motoraad Elektrik used to refurbish rotors on an exchange basis and they may still be doing so. Last time I needed one, they were less than $100 but that was a while ago.
They do good work so check em out!

$90 at Bob's BMW for a replacement last in the Fall of '08. Motorad Electik had the same one for about the same price.
I went down that same path--and still have my old, shorted rotor...maybe I'll be that old timer one day with time on my hands. In the meantime, it was nice and easy to get on the road again. :thumb

I am sure Rick at Motoraad Electrik is still doing the alternators. I pulled the starter on my old RS and sent it in for a rebuild. Turnaround was fast, and the price was reasonable. Rick is the best out there on all things electric for motorcycles. I recommend him.
