Hello Folks:

I've recently purchased a 1997 1100GS. As I have always done my own service, but this is my first BMW. Looking over the BMW Service manual, the clutch adjustment process seems to be a bit backward. As long as there is freeplay in the cluch lever on the transmission. Doesn't it make sense to make fine adjustments on the handlebar clutch lever rather than on the back of the transmission? Maybe I'm missing something here. Any advise is greatly appreciated.

Yes, I agree with you. It's really important to do the initial setup as the manual describes, though. After that, I'd compensate for wear by adjusting at the hand lever, pending the next major service.

You should be able to adjust freeplay at the clutch lever until it "bottoms out" at which point obviously you'll need to do it at the tranny after dialing the clutch lever back to the "starting" position for freeplay.
