Hi Gang,

I'm restoring a R65LS - I yanked the engine and had a valve job done, pistons dipped and cleaned and cylinders honed - everything checked out good - no major problems with any of the components. Odometer says @ 20K

A fellow MOA member is helping me with the project - we inadvertently put the left cylinder on the right and vice versa. After discovering this, we'd already installed the t the heads on, put the pushrods and torqued them down. Next we adjusted the valves.

Since the cylinders are identical and they were just honed and both pistons have new rings (we did put the pistons on the correct sides) is this going to be a problem?

Many thanks,

Ken Tuvman in MN

The only likely problem is engine balance. BMW routinely balances top-end components by installing the light piston assembly with the heavy rod of the two. The diferences from bike to bike vary widely. I would run it and see if vibration seems worse than before. If not, keep riding.

I cannot think of any reason. As long as pistons are installed correctly. The honing and new rings should negate any issues that I can think of. The piton skirts may have to establish new wear patterns, but that's about it. And they should be riding on a film of oil anyway.
