I just had my 03 K1200GT in for major service, and afterward the engine is rough on cold start up (for a few minutes). Once warm it runs great.
The dealer spent a few hours on it today and says it's unrelated to the service. They're pointing to the idle actuator or throttle valve potentiometer as the cause.
Has anyone had an issue with either of these? Since any service on this bike isn't cheap I don't want to go replacing things just like that...

Don't adjust or replace the throttle pot. It's a huge job, and they rarely fail.

The dealership confirms that the part that's bad is the idle actuator - it's the cheaper of the two.

Mine on my K12RS went bad around 100k. The problem it caused was either low idle which was not noticable while riding, or.....High idle which was very noticable at stops and when decelerating into an offramp curve! SURPRISE!!! I believe it ran around$200 for the part and service while I was having my once-every-100K-service-by-the-dealer done last year. If yours is bad, you really want it replaced. Several scary moments when it intermittently surges to 1800-2200 rpm when at a stop or when you expect it to be decelerating as noted above.

No scary moments for me before I brought it in. But it did seem like the bike was idling a little high. At startup it was rough and unsteady, until it warmed. All in the replacement is about $400. But that's in NYC.

So, has the job been done? Did replacing the idle conrol motor fix the problem?

The bike was finished yesterday, but I got caught in a meeting and couldn't get it on time. I'll let you know after I pick it up today.

Idles great now at about 1000 rpm. Previously it was up to about 1500 and waivered. I forgot to add in the diagnostic fee of $80, so it was a $480 fix for the idle actuator. Not so happy about that, but it runs well now.
