Plastic GS Gas Tank

I have a plastic gas tank with a BMW part number on it. It will fit both the 1100 & 1150's. I have been told that they were pulled back in by BMW a few years back. This would have been before our local dealer opened his doors,so he probably will not know anything about it.
Has anyone heard about this recall , if so do you know any of the reason behind it.

Either gasoline vapor or the fluid state permeated the tank and made the paint bubble, so they went metal.

Aside from the bubbling issue, I think they are a better tank. They don't dent, and it's easier to drill them to fit an Adventure-style crossover tube. Supposedly they hold a tenth ot two more fuel. OTOH you won't likely maintain a shine on the paint due to the fuel vapors.

It'd be a shame to turn it in...

Checked with BMWNA. They know about the problem if it was still in warranty they would consider a exchange, but it is not so sorry Charley.
I'm going to stick it back into the attic for a emergency spare.

I've got a leather tank cover. So, not only do you get the benefits of a plastic tank, but it looks great with the cover. In fact, I think it looks better than just a naked tank. Dont know where to get one though, it came with the bike when I bought it

I had the plastic tank on my '95 and did 50K miles with not a problem. Bought my '02 and after about 20K with the steel tank , found a plastic tank a my dealers in the attic and bought it from them and put it on my R1150GSA. Had to do some triming on the plastics where the tank meets the front but other than that just so happy with the extra fuel. I just love to know that I have 200 miles of fuel at mimimum which was my reason for going to the tank. So far no problems with about 10K miles on this unit.
