Sometimes the tech does not work. Only the tech, not speedo, just tech. What should be checked?

Which K bike is giving you trouble?

I had a tech that didn't work. I fired him.

On some K's, the tech faceplate can warp causing the tech needle to bind to the
tech plate. Upgrade to the new style tach faceplate. :D

Try tapping on the glass when the tach stops working. If it comes back to life, you probably have a bad connection in the instrument. Disassemble the instrument and check the connections.

Guess we need to add Spellcheck to these Forums now!

But 'tech' would have passed the filter.....need to install the 'intent' reader. Fortunately, I have never seen the tech work in a speedo.

OH..he means TACH, I get it now, haha.
What model/year K? The early models were plagued with gauge trouble.
BMW added gore-tex vents, I believe in 1988, to try to combat the fogging and resulting corrosion in some early K-bike clusters that caused all kinds of intermittent havoc. As far as I know, the clusters for all the traditional K-bikes (K100, K75 & K11) can experience bubbling on the black faceplate that can bind the tach and speedo needles. Check out the IBMWR tech K-Bike page (http://www.ibmwr.org/ktech/tach-fix.shtml), there is a whole section on K-Bike cluster issues and how to diagnose and repair.
A good deterrent is to use a half-cover when parked to keep the sun off the cluster. A friend with a new to her K75C just bought a Covermax half cover for $20 (medium), it fits perfectly and packs down to a little bigger than the size of a fist.

One thing almost never mentioned is that water would sit on the face and leak into the pod. I noticed that right off in '86 and (re) sealed the faceplate from the inside. I carefully used superglue so that it would seep under/between the face plate and the shell, sealing, being careful not to use too much and have it seep out onto the area of the face plate which was visable. So our '86 K100RSes were always dry inside from that point on and we never had the goretex vents.

Really good point, Jack and one that I've never seen properly addressed until now. I might have suggested this in one of my posts on the topic of speedo fixes a long time ago but no one ever reponded that I'm aware.
After removing and partially disassembling my instrument cluster several months ago to clean, inspect and remedy poor connections/corrosion I posed the question if it wouldn't be a good idea to seal the faceplate.
Since mine was a later version (1994) cluster it already had the Gore-Tex vents, yet I continue to have some fogging on cold mornings or after riding in the rain.*
Next time I remove the cluster I'll open it up and seal the faceplate (perhaps using something other than superglue--too tricky IMO) and be rid of the problem thereafter.:whistle
(*Although I haven't had any intermittent operation of the tach or speedo since my initial cleaning/lubing contacts with dielectric grease)
