Hi Dave.

There are cons? Other than price, which is a show stopper for me.
That does suck Jon, but I will live vicariously through you, and others, who will be having fun at rallies and/or riding with chicks on the back. :ha

All it really means is, I may be riding at night in Deer country or out Saturday morning. I dunno yet.

It just sucks because I have the vacation time and seniority, but the weeks since the 3 weekend of May all through summer have been filled already, (2 guys off) even up to the Dells Rally. That sucks.

After getting home from a very brief business trip, I found the heads/cylinders/pistons for my GSPD have FINALLY arrived. I'm going to start assembling everything, and I should get the bike started up on Saturday, and then take it for a short ride. After that, I have Sunday and Monday to take longer rides and work on breaking things in properly. This is the first Memorial Day in a few years where I haven't taken a trip with a bike.

Due to Memorial Day vacationers, I generally make the hour or so run into Canada and vacation up there. It's not a holiday for them, and I've found all of the campgrounds to be mostly empty. The roads are also nice and quiet. I considered doing my break-in up there - just make an overnight trip with two long riding days, but it seems like a lot of trouble, and I was just out of town earlier in the week with work. Might as well stick around and have a few beers with friends.

Bubba: I hope you're using the $5 carb balancer - it works quite well and doesn't thin out the wallet. :)

The motorcycles have been mostly unridden this season, and ALL of them need a little TLC before being ridden regularly. Oh, wait, my wife's Vino 125 is good to go as is my daughter's Bandit. What am I waiting for....

Good old 8 O'Clock red bag this morning. An easy light/medium roast and it's decently priced.

Ah, thank goodness for some morning rain. I'll go get some more weed & feed for the lawn to put down during the week, and I need a new oil collection pan for oil changing. The one I have now overflows when oil drains into it, because the neck of the built in funnel is too small. These are things that don't seem to get done in good weather.

Then if it clears off in the afternoon there may be some riding to do - yeehaw!

Still had a blast, down to Lemont and back and forth across the Slough area, then brunch.
Then back to MCC in Villa Park to look at Triumphs and Ducs. Triumph was having a sponsored demo ride day, turnout was good. New vintage style Triumph looks pretty nice. The Rocket III is so big I think you will have to build an addition on your garage if you buy one. Good grief!
Then home for some quick refreshment and out to Kane County and South on Bliss and what the heck. The road is out. OK, enough.

I went riding with my GSPD, today. Finally re-assembled, I took it for a short shakedown/ring seating ride yesterday (though they probably seated pretty well when I started the engine and took it straight to 3k rpm for a minute or two). Today was the first "Real" ride. After about 20 minutes, I realized that I had set the idle FAR too high in my tuning (oops) so I found a nice park/boat access area to pull off into along the Maumee River and fix that little problem. First score of the day: I stopped at "Weir Rapids". It wasn't anything crazy - a small drop in water level - very similar to a low-head dam, but natural. Scenic.

So I left that place and before turning back onto the road I came from, I noticed an interesting sight. There was a gravel road in front of me that seemed to lead off into the middle of farmland - I couldn't see the end. Off to the side was a sign - "Road closed when wet". Hmm. I'm on a GS, I have my good dual-sport boots on and other "full gear", and I DO have knobbies on the bike. So off I went and I blasted along that road for a few miles (standing triumphantly on the pegs like the true hardcore GS rider I am) - finally reaching the other end. Of course, I didn't really want to be where it came out, so wouldn't you know I had to sacrifice and head all the way back to where I started. For some reason the bike kept steering into the holes and low spots along the way. The horror. :)

It was a nice ride - though those few short miles on the gravel really made it all worthwhile. It's been a good day for me... but like Red, I should probably get to cleaning up around here...

Mornin' Roy. It was a wonderful day for riding in Michigan! The Village of Stockbridge hosted a free breakfast for all BMW riders this morning. We had bluebird skies and no wind early on, and the day got warmer but never too hot. I've never seeen so many BMW's in one place at one time outside of a rally. But free food certainly brings them in. Apparently the village will host a different marque each month. I would expect a monumental turnout when they host Harleys.

Brian is home this week. It's slow where he works so he gets a few days off.
He hates second shift so he doesn't mind. I, on the other hand, worry about the loss of income and how we are going to pay the next house payment. (small worries, I know.)

The only good news is that he is changing the oil on my GS today.

I had a bunch of running around from facility to facility today in rush hour traffic, so I chose to go with the old subaru outback than my GS this morning, although the MN day was high 40s to mid 70s and ideal for a ride.

Riding when I'm overloaded with files and paperwork and laptop and too tired, the stop and go traffic really sucks, so I left her at home today!

Shortly after I woke up this morning, I pretty much had my day planned; work a little then ride for the rest of the day. Backroads Touring; Kansas is having their Stampede about 30 miles away. I thought I'd take the PD up and check it out.

Work went well, but when I got home, I learned that I needed to cook the meat for the blood drive on Monday. (We serve sandwiches, homemade cookies, and a drink to those that donate or volunteer.) The SO had a girlfriend drop into town just for the weekend (its rodeo weekend here) so she decided to go spend the day visiting with her. Okay. I can monitor the roast beef and pork and still ride. I figured I'd just go out back and practice handling the bike on dirt with a full tank of gas (9.2 gal) So, I put the meat on to cook, got it all seasoned up and smelling good, went in and grabbed my gloves.

I get the bike out and warmed it up by doing a few runs up and down the road in front of the house before starting to do figure 8's in the grass. We have several beehives and I noticed the air was just full of bees, and they weren't going anywhere; just circling. I get to looking around and there is a swarm forming on a small tree. So, I park the bike and get a fresh hive ready and a sheet to catch the bees in and a saw to take down the limbs they're clustering on and put on my bee suit.

This is Kansas so you know its windy, and pretty warm. Working by myself, it was a little tricky to get the sheet wrapped around the swarm, but finally I succeeded, and then started sawing off the limb. The hat on my bee suit kept getting blown to one side, and I was sweating like a pig. The sweat kept getting into my eyes. Did you know its virtually impossible to wipe your eyes with a bee suit on? It took about an hour to gather everything and get the bees into the new hive.

By then, it was time to check the meat, and I was pretty thirsty, so that "required" a beer. I was really thirsty and had two.

Now, I don't feel like wrestling with the bike. So I just pulled up a chair. Perhaps I'll get to ride tomorrow.

Southern minnesota has been a pretty severe drought the last month or so, so I was pleased to wake up this morning to a soaking rain, and here at 4:30 pm it's still raining, the creek behind the house is full, and the world is soaking up this gift from the sky.

I've had the big 15 ft doors open on the barn open wide, working on the Beemer, in my front bay. Spent the day fiddiling with several other projects and marveling of the rainy day. I am waiting for the water to boil so I can pour a cup of chai tea before returning to my very special man cave.

Do you mind explaining a bit more about the sheet and catching the bees? We had swarm right outside our office Friday that decided to take possession of some poor woman's bicycle. They were like a blanket covering the saddle and then some. So, when they're swarming are they relatively docile? Easy to "catch?" How do you round them up? :scratch

European Honey Bees only sting when defending their home or themselves. Since the swarm is homeless, they have no reason to sting. In the middle of the swarm, is the queen. Most everybody will stay close to the queen while a couple of scout bees go look for a suitable home. Until the scouts come back with news of several suitable sites, at which time one will be chosen, the swarm will just hang there. Once a new home is selected, the swarm will slowly expand until everyone is airborne, and then they make a beeline (I couldn't resist:D) towards it. I saw this happen once when I was a little slow to get things ready. They just flew away.

My technique for capturing a swarm is to pass a sheet under the swarm and then bring the corners together to form a basket of sorts. I will then give the limb a hard shake, and the bees fall into the sheet. Some will fly, but most will stay in the ball to protect the queen. Today it was really windy, and the bees had congregated on the trunk of a small (3" diameter) trash tree out in the prairie grass behind the house. So, I just cut down the whole tree after wrapping the sheet around the swarm.

Once I have the bees in the sheet, I carry it to the hive, gently shake them into it, and put the lid on. Then drape the sheet, with the remaining bees, from the front of the hive. If the queen is in the hive, the rest will just walk up the sheet and into the hive following her scent.

Bees are really amazing little creatures!

BRAIN SYSTEM: Attention. Alert registered.

CENTRAL: Alert? Number One, report!

NUMBER ONE: Sir! We're picking up loud music.

CENTRAL: Music? We were just asleep!

NUMBER ONE: Yes sir. Ears report it's "The Last Train to Clarksville."

CENTRAL: Good God! Are we being tortured?

NUMBER ONE: Sir, Eyes are functional and request instruction.

CENTRAL: Tell them to open up and try to find out what is going on.

NUMBER ONE: Scope! Okay, I see darkness... darkness... Wait, there's a
woman
sleeping here.

CENTRAL: A woman?

NUMBER ONE: Sir, Libido Station wants to know if it's Anna Kournikova.

CENTRAL: Forget about Libido. What can you tell me?

NUMBER ONE: Sir, Memory reports a near perfect match to "wife," sir.

CENTRAL: Well of course. Keep looking.

NUMBER ONE: Sir, urgent report from Stomach on the horn, do you want to
take it?

CENTRAL: Stomach, what's going on?

STOMACH: Sir, we've taken a hit, it...it looks bad, sir.

CENTRAL: Get hold of yourself, man!

STOMACH: Yes sir. It looks like a burrito, sir. It exploded at about 1900
hours and
we've been out of action ever since. I don't...I don't know if she can
take much
more, Captain.

CENTRAL: Stomach! Now you listen to me, son. We're all counting on you up
here.
Don't give up now. Remember the chili of '94? We made it through that, we
can make
it through anything.

STOMACH: Yes sir. You can count on me, sir.

CENTRAL: Good man.

NUMBER ONE: Sir, I've got a visual on the clock!

CENTRAL: Tell me, Number One.

NUMBER ONE: Oh my God, sir. It's horrible.

CENTRAL: Dammit sailor, get a grip on yourself!

NUMBER ONE: It's... It's six thirty, sir. In the morning.

CENTRAL: In the morning? Not again. I thought...I thought that we'd had
the worst of
it yesterday.

SYSTEM: Sixty seconds to consciousness.

CENTRAL: This is madness. Do you know what's going to happen if we go
conscious now,
this early?

NUMBER ONE: Work, sir?

CENTRAL: That's right, Number One. It'll be work, all right. I
don't...don't know if
I can live through that hell again.

SYSTEM: Fifty seconds to consciousness.

NUMBER ONE: Sir? Do you have orders?

CENTRAL: Hmmm?

NUMBER ONE: Orders, sir. Do you have orders for us?

CENTRAL: Orders? Orders, Number One? Damn right there are orders! Let's
get
ourselves moving.

NUMBER ONE: Aye aye, sir!

SYSTEM: Forty seconds to consciousness.

CENTRAL: Shut that damn thing off, I'm trying to think. Get our remote
stations on
line. I want a Search and Acquire on anything that feels like a snooze
button. Tell
them to MOVE. Bladder!

BLADDER: Yes sir?

CENTRAL: How are you holding?

BLADDER: All systems are flush and ready, sir. We can go another three
hours, easy.

CENTRAL: Very well, Bladder. Number One, get me Nose on the horn.

NOSE: Sir, Nose reporting, sir!

CENTRAL: Good to hear from you, Nose. How are you doing up there?

NOSE: We registered cat breath about twenty minutes ago, but it was pretty
faint and
I didn't think...

CENTRAL: Steady on, nose. You were right not to trigger an alert.

NOSE: Thank you, sir.

CENTRAL: Nose, I'm afraid I have bad news for you, son. We took a burrito
last night.

NOSE: Oh no, sir, not again!

CENTRAL: I said steady! You're going to have to hold on, you hear me? Hold
on, and
it will pass. I don't want ANYTHING getting through to Consciousness.

NOSE: Yes sir. I'll try, sir.

CENTRAL: That's the spirit. Stomach!

STOMACH: Sir?

CENTRAL: How are you doing down there?

STOMACH: We've been breached, Captain. The whole alimentary is in flames.
I'm trying
to keep it contained, but I can't promise anything.

CENTRAL: Damn!

NUMBER ONE: Sir, Libido Station reports it is ready for battle!

CENTRAL: Tell Libido to calm down, I'll call him when I need him. Any
report from
our search party?

NUMBER ONE: Sir, Fingers report they located and toppled a glass of water,
a pair of
glasses, and a box of Kleenex. No luck on the snooze, sir.

CENTRAL: Number One, I don't mind telling you, if we don't get this under
control
we're going to lose her.

NUMBER ONE: Yes sir. Sir, Libido requests positive verification that the
woman
sleeping next to us is not Anna Kournikova.

CENTRAL: For crying out loud.

NUMBER ONE: Sir, Ears reports the song is over. It's going to commercial,
sir.

CENTRAL: How much time on the system clock?

NUMBER ONE: Ten seconds to consciousness, sir. We've lost smile control in
the lower
facial and we're developing a frown.

CENTRAL: Brace yourself, Number One. I'm afraid we've had it.

NUMBER ONE: Sir! Fingers has located target. Repeat, Fingers is on target!

CENTRAL: Fire!

NUMBER ONE: Hit! Sir, direct hit!

CENTRAL: Ears!

NUMBER ONE: It's gone, Captain! Ears reports the music is gone!

CENTRAL: We've done it!

SYSTEM: Consciousness cancelled.

NUMBER ONE: Sir, all systems are ready for sleep mode. Repeat, sleep mode
now ready.

CENTRAL: Trigger sleep mode NOW.

NUMBER ONE: Sleep mode triggered, aye aye, sir.

CENTRAL: Shut Eyes.

NUMBER ONE: Eyes off, sir. Frown relaxed, smile restored.

CENTRAL: By golly, that was a close one.

NUMBER ONE: Yes sir. Sir, Dream Team requests selection. Libido asking for
something
naked, sir.

CENTRAL: Request denied. Let's roll the one where we show up for church
wearing only
our underwear, I like that one.

NUMBER ONE: Roger that, sir. Dream selection completed and tape is
rolling, sir.

CENTRAL: Good work, Number One. You take the helm.

NUMBER ONE: Aye aye, sir.

No snoring here this morning. I bypassed the keyboard for the handlebars. I went for a 90+ mile ride (all backroads) down to Cassoday, KS. There weren't many people there when I arrived for First Sunday, but about 2000 bikes eventually showed up. I should have taken the camera. There was a sweet early seventies BMW with sidecar and a great plateful of biscuits and sausage gravy that I could have shown you.

Hope everyone one had as good a day!

WHAT A BIKE!

Today, as my "chosen"profession is property management, I start my day running rent roles, hearing all the 40 VM's from my day off yesterday.

I would rather be working on bikes today!

Unfortunately, I'm way TOO-DAMN-SLOW to do it for money!

The good news is I had a great ride into the cities today, and thanks to the recent drought ending rains, I spent a few miles riding in chest deep fog, fog so thick I could see the wave parting as I rode through; like something out of the movies!

Last night late on my way to the barn, about 9:30 pm with the end of the twilight barely lighting my way, a "V" of about 80 canadian geese came over the top of the house, so low in fact you could hear their wings beating in the silence of the evening. I got this weird feeling that they very much appeared to know exactly where they were going, in control, and for some reason flying late, flying exactly towards the sun going down.

When you see geese frightened out of a lake or uprooted, they don't fly with such authority.

It was beautiful. It was very unusal for this time of the year.

It absolutely made my day.

My help is a group of young people that have discipline problems and one 31 year old that is on probation for drunk and disorderly. They're part of the outreach program the organization seeks to help.

The older man is no problem, but the two 19 yo's didn't show up for work yesterday; they were too tired after a night of partying in KC. Today, when they came in, I explained why employers hire people, what was expected of them, and how not showing up creates havoc with job assignments, etc. I then reminded them of my policy of saving really crappy jobs for those that lose my favor, and asked them if they wanted to work or go home. They chose to work.

The basement has been flooded a couple of times since 1967 when the school was last used and in fact, we just pumped out about 6 inches of water. The floor was covered with 2" of slimy mud. It needed to be cleaned. They got the job. I told them they were my "mudbugs" until it is clean.

I handed them two 5 gal buckets and a shovel, and they went to work. I was really proud of them for taking on the task, and they're doing a good job. When they finish, I promised to move them from the mud room to the pent house; helping with the roof rebuild.

As you know, the toilet on boats is called a "head". When I managed Seabrook Shipyard, head repairs were saved for those "special" people. They'd get to be "head man" for the day!

I believe that much of what is wrong with today's workforce is they haven't had it explained to them how the "real" world works. Too many supervisors take the easy way out and just let unacceptable behavior go or they fire the individual instead of grooming them. These are basically good kids that just haven't had any guidance reinforced with introductions to reality.

Back when I was a young Marine working on jets, my shop supervisor taught me a great lesson. There was this one part that could only be removed by feel. I had been working for several hours, lying on the wing of the plane in the hot Yuma, AZ sun with my arms stuck inside an access panel, trying to remove this part. The Gunny came out to check on my progress. When I told him the part wouldn't come out, he climbed up on the wing, reached in, and pulled the part out. As I stood there, drenched in sweat, thanking him profusely for helping me out, he calmly put it back in place and said, "Yeah it will" and walked away. Within minutes, I had the part in hand and was heading for the cool of the shop. Its a lesson I've never forgotten.

As a young Private in the Army, the Drill Instructors got my attention once in much the same manner. One night at Ft. Jackson, in the rain, I moved holes for several hours. Seems like every hole I dug was in the wrong place, and I had to move it somewhere else.

Wish I could say I turned out OK...................:dunno

The guilt of association with the Tavern makes the two inseparable on the rest of the forum. Guess I wear it as a badge of honor.

So, we have finally been swimming in the new pool.
I don't know if I can afford anything more "free" from Make a Wish.

"In the Swim.com" has some pretty good deals on on going, expe$ive chemicals that you mu$t have to keep the water from turning green.

Mention my name, I've sent their kids to college!

PS try the solar balls, they work!

It's not the chemicals. I had to pay for extra digging, gravel, drain tile, fencing for around the pool, we are already up to 1600 dollars and counting. The deck will be a 5'x5' because the "extra" for an actual 10'x15' was way too much.
I can buy a heck of a lot of lawn furniture for 5100 dollars.
I would have rather that they paid that, instead of throwing us a party.
We can throw the dang party. This is all very weird. I wonder if they make families they take to Disney pay for their own rooms and food and plane tickets?

Yes, we got "that" form too, from the insurance co. There are no slides or diving boards or "deep end" so it won't be bad.

Roy, is it close up to the rear of the house, or out by the bonfire area?

Cool!

When it's all done, it'll be worth it for your daughter!

It's in line with the bonfire area, just past the big flat spot I made for the old pool.
Rachael has been swimming in it already.
We fired up the heater yesterday, the water was 91 and the air was 83. :ha
She had a blast.
