I just ran across this image on izismile.com. Maybe it is yours or someone you know.

Wow! Gnat season is here.

I rode a Honda 450 in Morgan City, LA in the early 70's. It would get like that during the "love bug" (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Love_bug) hatch. You would hit two at once, they mated on the fly.

My guess is that's from night riding...however, the lovebugs are truly a daytime mess I have ridden thru a few times...YUK!

Steve:

I was just south of your neck of the woods yesterday coming back from San Antonio on I-10 about three miles west of Comfort when I went through a swarm of "something." In about the time it took to snap your fingers, I must have hit at least fifty of them. Hard to tell what they were since they disintegrated on impact, but the aftermath looked about the size of a medium horse fly.

Nothing like the sensation of a hoard of bugs exploding in front of your eyes all at once. Vive la full face helmet.

It's really something the way those bare headed cruiser dudes down that Texas protein.

Could be lake flys from the Lake Winnebago (WI) area, or May flies from along the Mississippi River. I've had bad experiences with both.

Hey all; Too small to be Michigan May flies. We have a huge hatch every year in the U.P., and the trout up there love the darn things!! Great fishing if you can tie a good imitation!! Once found my bike (at the time we were riding a Valkyrie trike) buried under several million of the little buggers. Took forever to get them cleaned off (went fishing while waiting for them to leave on their own!!) They do taste something like chicken. Vaya con Dios, Dutch

Interesting that you mention them. I rode through High Cliff State Park last Wednesday on my RT and hit swarms of what I thought was lake flies also. I don't know how long that goes on. Hopefully, just a day or two a year.

Yeah, the first hatch is around Mothers Day. They can live for up to two weeks. The worst part is at night when they swarm around street lights. As they die and fall to the ground, they create a very slippery mess below said street lights.:sick Just another reason to Love Wisconsin :buds

I did a ride up the Great River Road along the Mississippi in Wiscosin from Potosi to Genoa last spring. I hit a stretch along the river riding north from Prarie du Chien and after a few miles, my helmet and windshield looked just like that as in the picture. I had to stop several times to clean my visor. The amazing thing to me was that there were guys on cruisers without helmets and windshields riding through those swarms of bugs. I imagine they had to floss the bug carcasses from between their teeth.
