Does anyone know what the story is on the electric brake wear indicator wires (2008 K1200GT). It appears that when the brake pads (rear in my case) become worn, a small pair of wires begin to rub the brake rotor until the wires either break connection or make connection, which causes the warning light on the instrument panel to come on. Has anyone had to replace this little wire connection that contacts the rotor and if so, with what? I personally don't like it and may try to jumper the wires together and see if the warning light goes out. Any info is appreciated.

It comes with the new brake pads.

Your assumptions are correct, the wire gets an "open" worn in to it and the light comes on. My bike (07) only has a few thousand on it and my light is on. Story is "wire ties too tight". I put a new set of pads on the front, carefully NOT getting my wire ties too tight, and my light is still on. Dealer can update my instrument cluster so it will (from now on) let the light turn off after I replace pads. As of right now, the dealer would need to keep resetting that light EVERY time it came on.
If they couldn't program-out the problem I was seriously considering doing a bulb-masectomy on the cluster.
On your 08, it should already be programmed to shut the light off when you have a good circuit. Have you ever replaced the pads? Might be a warranty repair.

Thanks for the replies guys!! I haven't replaced the pads yet but was considering an EBC HH set because I think they are a better pad than the OEM. Never considered the warranty angle and I should check with the dealer before I go too far. Thanks again.

By the way Gilly, will you be attending the GR3 rally this weekend? If so, I'll try to look you up-I should be there around 2-3 PM on a blue GT pulling a camper.

I know these threads are about 2 months old but I just had this happen to me on my '07 GT with 7100 miles on it. Thought I would add this if anyone else is starting to see the problem. There is a known issue with the wiring of the sensor developing a break which sets off the sensor. As stated above, the light will not go out unless the dealer resets it. I took my bike in this morning and the dealer confirmed it was an open in the wiring ciruit. The pads still had plenty of wear left. The dealer is replacing both front sets of pads under warranty which is a real good thing as the cost was $148/set (X2) plus labor if I had to pay for them. (BMW gives him a hard time about just changing both when only one is bad but he is insisting they let him do both and they do. Nice to have a dealer who looks out for me). They told me I can remove the wiring from the sensor and splice the two leads together in the future if I want to use regular pads which are a heck of a lot cheaper.

Hi had the front sensor go with 500 miles on the bike. My mechanic said they put zip ties on the wire to keep it from moving around and a lot of times they do it such that the wire breaks. He fixed it and I've had no problems since.

I am glad to see these threads. Was on the way to International Rally when my light came on. My '07 k1200gt only had 5300 miles on it. I examined the pads and it did not appear there was enough wear for the light to be on. I take my bike in this week for the 6k tune up/oil change. Dread seeing that bill.

I have had the same problem with sensor light coming on at 6100 miles. Then it was sporadic on and off. Noticed that the sensor was touching the rotor. at 9800.
Took it to dealer and the wireties were too close and it caused the wire to break.
IT was covered by warranty. there is a copper cover over the wire on the pad. this gets warn thru till the wire is rubbed into. I still had 5/32 pad left.
Use a mirror to check thickness from under rotor. U can get a good view of the wire guard if you are getting close on pad depth.
Safe riding!
