The manual for my sons R1150 GS calls of a NGK BKR 7 EKC spark plug. He is not near a dealer and the auto parts stores can't even find a listing for this plug. Does anyone know of a Champion or other brand equivalent plug that can be used long enough to get him to a dealer. Thanks

Go to the local Wally-world and get Autolite AP3923 (or the APP3923 with the platinum tip). Gap at .030"

I've got an '04 1150 GS, which is dual plugged and came with an upper NGK and lower Bosch plugs. Advanced Auto was able to order my NGK plug, next day arrival at store--no charge, for 1/2 the price BMW dealer wanted for it. I got a box of the Boschs from a motorcycle electronics parts supplier in Denver (Euromotoelectrics), again for a substantial reduction over BMW cost.

Wow, good to know! Unfortunately, they don't have any Advance Auto's in California but this is good information while on the road. Thanks,

AutoZone will do the same thing.

Platinum tip plugs last for at least 50k miles in an automobile engine. I run them twice that with no degradation of fuel mileage.
What does the Beemer engine do to them that requires a shorter replacement interval? I understand that it runs at higher rpm, but at double that of a car, they should last at least 25k miles.

1100/1150 motors are setup at the very ragged edge of too lean. As a result, they seem to be very sensitive to changes that most people might consider inconsequential. Spark plug configuration ( single electrode, multi electrode, sharp tip, broad tip, gap), very close tolerance valve adjustments, throttlebody syncronization, etc really do make a noticable difference in how smoothly the motor runs.
On top of that, two "identical" bikes may not behave exactly the same WRT the above mentioned adjustments.
