I have noticed a couple of oil drops (tranny fluid) after each ride. It is coming from the gear shift lever. After looking at some blow ups it looks like the oil seal can be replaced without breaking down the whole tranny. Could I be this lucky or am I reading this wrong. 1984 R100RT.

Great info. It is interesting that this problem started after my last gear oil change. Opened drain plug and some oil did drain out. Removed about 50 cc more and went for a short ride with no oil leak. Thanks again.

You can replace the seal. If you haven't done a fluid change or a spline lube lately, it would be a good opportunity to combine jobs.

After thae seal replacement and U ride the bike, if no more dripping U should be good to go. If dripping continues, drain the gearbox. I think it calls for 800cc's to fill. Instead add 700cc's. Should put the oil level just below the seal. This should stop the leaking and oily boots. Went thru this years ago on my R90. Probably road the bike 100,000 miles this way with no leaking and no gearbox problems.

Is always fill until it runs out the fill hole...Let it settle once it starts running a bit, so you can be sure its leveled out in there:). GL5 regular oil in there to, no syns as I see it. I syn my new BMW tranny, but not my Airhead as it simply does not need it. I know you did not bring this up, but just in case. Randy

No need to even wait until service to replace that seal. Just lay the machine over onto the right side and do the deed. One note: Be sure to note the seating depth of the existing seal and seat the new one the same. DAMHIK!

As always, YMMV.

That works as well. Just be sure to pull the battery if it is a wet cell.

Agreed. You can replace this seal without draining the gear oil. The little you lose during the changeout can be topped off afterwards. And I'm in the "too deep club" with JWK. I was overly ambitious and sent my new seal in at least twice as far as the old one had been seated. Fortunately, it has maintained a leak free seal for about 20k now. (Some guys actually use TWO seals in there....there's room for two).
