I got the idea from the Peg Packer from BestRestProducts.com. Ended up costing me ~$15 worth of materials and about 4 hours of my time. I'll make another one for the other side. It's not even close to the quality of the Peg Packer but it seems like it will do the job. I still need to get a strap for it and i'll likely get them powder coated.

Thanks John :) I like them too. They're such a close match that I might not even get them repainted.

If I can - I'd also suggest rounding off the sharp corners. They would be rather brutal to come into contact with on a get-off..
Just a thought.. (I think I'd put beading on the edges actually..)

i agree, in fact that was the first thing I did after I took the pic. Laying a bead is a great idea and i would do it if I could lay a nice bead. But since I am absolutely horrible at welding I think i'll modify your suggestion and put some rubber modling along the edge.
I just hope I can duplicate this for the other side.

Another great idea from Toddlamp comes to fruition---congratulations.
Yeah, rounding those sharp edges was the first thing I thought of, too.
And if you don't powdercoated the brackets, what about coating them in that soft plastic goo you can buy at Home Depot for coating tool handles and such?
Might be a slightly safer solution---having something like hard sharp metal right in back of my legs might bother me a bit. I don't know, maybe I'm just getting wimpy in my old age...
Any rate, those brackets will serve you will on your big adventure next year, eh?

Thanks Jeff. That's the hope!
Do you have any more information on the goo? I'm pretty sure the steel I used in not stainless so I am going to have to cover it with something. I'll need something durable.

Never have used the goo but I've seen it at Wally World or Home Depot for sure---I think it's just like the same stuff a lot of tools have on them to begin with, kinda soft and plastic-y feel, almost like a thick vinyl.
Anyone else here know what I'm talking about? If so, plz chime in:ear

Get some "truck bed spray liner" from an automotive shop like vautozone.

Tom Anspach (poverty rider member) had tie wrapped a section of 6 inch drain tile in the same location. Used it carry his bottles of wine :bottle to the rally. Sorry no pics
